Plenty of shops, coffee bars, pubs .lots of history old buildings with interesting blue plaques.
Steep in parts so I think it’s better for people who like to walk.
Favourite pub was the Blue Bell very friendly and how a pub use to be.
Lots of antiques shops to browse around.

First I met lovely people at the Book Aid shop that drew me...
First I met lovely people at the Book Aid shop that drew me in on the way to the castle. A woman there informed of the existence of some little known or advertised places of historical interest. The well known points of interest, the castle, the Bowes Museum, and the Butter Market—wryly referred to by local people as “the round thingy” in the middle of the high street—lived up to expectations. The charity thrift shops and the Witham, a cultural center cum shop on the High Street offered wonderful shopping. People working at the castle, the Bowes museum, and the food co-op were wonderfully helpful, The food and service at Blagraves in a remarkable building, parts of which date from the 15th century, were excellent.
The town is easy to get around. Almost everything to be seen and done is on three contiguous streets, Galgate, the High Street, and the road leading from the Butter Market, about a five-minute walk, to the Bowes Museum (I didn’t get its name). There’s a sign for the castle ruins hidden and sloping downhill behind the Methodist church at the corner of Galgate and High Street.
I was only disappointed to not be able to see the prayer labyrinth in the floor of St.Mary’s Anglican Church at the corner of High Street and the road to the museum. It was covered with chairs occupied by worshippers for a special service with performance by a huge childrens’ choir at the moment I looked in on a Friday afternoon and the seating was being kept in place for several services over that weekend of the third Sunday of Advent. It was a consolation to see such signs of spiritual life in that church, and, God willing, I’ll get to see the labyrinth at a quieter time.

Lovely small town with lots to see and do in surrounding area
Pubs are good and a great choice for eating from breakfast to evening meal
Hecklers cottage was lovely where we stayed but house keeping appalling good job plenty places to eat out
Such a shame !!
We would love to stay again
Excellent location with plenty of walks. A visit to High and Low Force Waterfalls is a must. If you like driving, the narrow country roads with twists and turns are good fun. Plenty of bird life. The town of Barnard Castle is well worth a visit as it has plenty of local shops and cafes. Stanhope, further north and across the moors, is another good place to visit. Plenty of places to eat but we preferred the Fox and Hounds at Cotherstone. A very nice country pub with friendly staff and good food and drink.
The hosts (Glenda and Daniele) were wonderful and very kind. We had two rooms: two of us were in the garden room, which was absolutely wonderful. I stayed in the single person room (room 1) which was quite small, but equipped with every amenity and comfortable. Both rooms were on the garden and very quiet at night.
The breakfast was the best English breakfast I have ever had in many trips to the UK!
Parking on the street was free, and it is 10 minute walk to the town centre.
The location was perfect! We were so close to the centre and had a lovely view of Barnard Castle at the bottom of the road. We really appreciated the hamper left by the hosts and all the facilities in the property such as fridge/freezer, washing machine and dishwasher came in good use. There were so many nice restaurants and lovely walks nearby. We we really pleased that there was a space to park one car right outside the property.
The location was ideal as it was in the centre of the town, with all of the facilities nearby, including the castle, which was our reason for visiting Barnard Castle. The restaurant/breakfast room was very clean and the staff were friendly and efficient. We enjoyed the breakfast but the black pudding was rather dry and the poached eggs whites were not fully cooked. The cleanliness of the hotel, overall was excellent.
Really great place to stay, gorgeous local area. The room I had in the courtyard was exceptional, cosy but enough space. Decent comfy bed, powerful shower and so quiet you cannot hear any other guests. The breakfast was delicious and I also had an evening meal there too which was superb. There were a few of us staying with our dogs and they made us feel very welcome. Would definitely book again!
A splendid old hotel building with up-to-date food and facilities. The location is amazing, just by the A66 and so easily accessible, but it feels like the middle of the country, with walks along the river Greta, beside which lies the evocative ruin of Brignall Old Church. Great for Barnard Castle, Bishop Auckland, and Penrith, among other places.
the location was excellent right in the centre of town amid all the shops and bars with easy access to the castle and river The property was well equipped clean and comfortable. The host communicated well and left some breakfast staples which were very welcome Very enjoyable stay.
The room was large and comfortable. The bed was excellent. The bathroom was excellent. We were made to feel welcome. The atmosphere was pleasant. It was very quiet and relaxed. The pub and food were are excellent. Very convenient to everything including a visit to Barnard Castle.
Fantastic location - made a great base for exploring Bowes/Barnard Castle/Richmond/etc. The room couldn't have been any cleaner & was really comfortable. The hotel is amazingly well run by a 2-person team. The dinner menu has lots of choice, including a full separate veggie menu.
Beautiful character property in an idyllic location on the river. Tastefully decorated with interesting items and very well equipped. Super comfortable bed. Excellent location within easy walking distance to shops, pubs, restaurants and attractions of Barnard Castle
Right in the heart of Barnard Castle. The food was excellent, probably one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had. Rooms and public spaces had quality furnishings and very clean. Would definitely recommend.
Excellent location and our host (Joan) was as courteous and helpful as ever. My wife, our grandkids and I had a great time in Barnard Castle thanks to this booking. Highly recommended.
Great pub wit accommodation. Lovely location and would recommend to anyone for a short visit to barnard castle , will definitely use this again when I come back to barnard castle .
beautiful locations , clean spacious and staff were fantastic. special thank you to Alex for sorting everything for me . I can’t thank her enough and she is a credit to the hotel
