Malaspina Strait Cottage is situated in Powell River and offers barbecue facilities. This beachfront property offers access to a balcony, free private parking and free WiFi. The hosts, Sylvia and Don, were attentive, friendly and responsive for us if we needed them. They even brought us home baked cookies on the second day and there was homemade quince jam in the kitchen. - all delicious. I asked for the recipe for the cookies and Sylvia delivered a printed copy to us in the suite - amazing! The property was extremely comfortable and spotlessly clean. Everything needed was thought of and the suite has an eclectic and interesting vibe. We had quite a bit of rain when we were there, with it being late May, and were travelling with our 89 year old mother so to have such a comfortable, cozy space to spend time in was wonderful. Having the beach so close by and the views of the Strait from the property was a bonus we took advantage of, even with the rain. We would all go back there in a heartbeat.

I enjoyed the many trail options and the gorgeous sunsets, especially viewed from Willington beach. Really enjoyed walking the well maintained seawall. Also, enjoyed the friendly pickleball club, they were very welcoming. The choice of diverse restaurants was appreciated. The people are relaxed and friendly. Our favourite restaurant was the Cookery in Powell river. Getting around via bike ,bus or shuttle option was easy.
I grew up here, so it’s always nice to return. It’s a very different town now that the paper mill has closed. Not as vibrant, but the historic townsite is still very interesting to see. The Patricia Theatre is the oldest working cinema in BC. There are good trails and places for water sports.
The area is beautiful, especially when looking west at the ocean. People were very friendly everywhere we went. There are some great restaurants. However, electric vehicle charging could have been better.
Powell River is a pleasant surprise once you get there by ferry. It has charm and a heritage feel to the lovely old neighbourhoods. There is history worth noting. The people were very friendly, it was easy to find dining. I wouldn't have guessed 'Snickers' to be a Greek restaurant but we gave it a try. The portions were huge! And the ferry ride over to Vancouver Island was right in the middle of town and easy to access.
Powell River is a "jumping off point" for outdoor enthusiasts and has loads of natural beauty. The town itself is nothing special, but the local people have a welcoming, casual and unpretentious vibe that is really charming. The Old Courthouse Inn and its Edie Rae Cafe are a slice of the Victorian past. Magpie's has delicious breakfasts with a Ukrainian flare.
As we were on a motorcycle trip with a specific agenda it didn't allow for extra time to be spent exploring Powell River but definitely a return visit is in the future plans. It's a lovely town and our accommodation was fabulous!!
