Located in Naples, 5.7 km from Naples Central Train Station, Hotel Serena provides accommodation with a garden, free private parking and a bar. We stayed at the hotel for one night during a layover after a late flight.
We were only here for an overnight before flying out the next day. Had a tour in Pompei in the afternoon after arriving by train from parts south with family. We got off the train, checked into our lodging and walked back to the train station. After spending the afternoon in Pompei, we grabbed the The Campania Express back to Naples and our room. Got cleaned up for dinner and went out to dine locally, on the later side. Back to the room and out the door to the Alibus that took us to the airport from just in front of the Napoli Centrale Train Station. So we didn't see a whole of Naples. From the little that we saw, I would say, if you don't have business in Naples, it didn't come off as a "Touristy" kind of town. That said, we did not visit any of the sites listed below in question #5.
I have nothing positive to say about Naples. I found it a very neglected city. Streets were dirty with graffiti on walls and buildings. My friend and I were walking back to our hotel after a meal at 8.30pm. She was mugged, a thug pulled her head back from behind and grabbed her beautiful gold chain pulled it, broke it and was gone before we realised he had it. She was so stunned and shocked. We were terrified. We just kept walking really fast until we reached our hotel.. We didn’t think a lot of the city having sightseeing during the day. Our terrifying experience will ensure we will never be back.
We had been to Rome, Florence, Bologna, Pisa, and Venice previously, so expected Naples to be similar. Not so. We thought Naples was the college version of Italy. It was okay, just dirty and not as pleasant. Didn't need as much time here and would have rather been elsewhere. The Royal Palace at Caserta was a very nice surprise and was up there with Versailles though. Super easy and cheap to take the trains, just no interest in coming back to Naples.
Naples is a city of history and layers of culture and unique vestiges. It is soulful and alive. But you have to like noise and absolute chaos to enjoy staying in this city. It's also full of artful dodgers, con artists and tricksters. People tell you tales and give you the wrong information out of pleasure. They blow their horns incessantly just to show they can. They are full of drama for the smallest things. It is not for me, thanks. I would always pass through Naples and not stop more than one or two nights.
You have to get used to the Napoli way of life. The city is super busy and you have to watchout for yourself whenever you cross the streets. Craziest drivers out there PERIOD. Restaurant/Cafe staff is usually very lazy which is first shocking but then you get used to that also. On a more positive note, the city is something special with its culture, traditions and love to Maradona and football overall. We had the best and worst pizza in the world in Napoli. The Napoli fried and stuffed pizza is super fatty and only for the big hungry guys. On the other hand, the more traditional Italian pizza is worlds best in Napoli. I totally recommend Napoli to everyone that wants to experience something new. Just be prepared for the things i mentioned above and you will be ok. :D
The city is chaotic and very intense. It has a lot of history and a vibrant energy, day and night. It might shock someone that might be coming from a more organized and tide location, but if you are open-minded it is just a delight.
