The staff were delightful, kind, friendly and always helpful. The accommodation was excellent for my daughter and I. We could not have been happier. Any query we had, or the adaptability of our meals were all catered for with such grace.

Everyone was so incredibly welcoming, supportive and friendly during our stay, taking the time to visit with us during meals and helping to accommodate our relatively packed time on Mafia. We felt truly at home and only wish we had stayed longer to enjoy the grounds. Upon arrival we were promptly greeted by curious monkeys and saw several elephant shrews as a bonus to our stay. The whale shark excursions that they offer are best on the island (we tried one other operator as well), being not only efficiently run and catering to all demographics, but also very educational and responsibly run by a team that is clearly passionate and informed about the animals. I am extremely happy with my stay, not only because of how comfortable my room was, but especially because of how helpful my host, Bunda, was throughout my entire stay. He walked me through the village to show me where to buy local food, he helped me understand local prices and some basic Swahili phrases and words, he walked with me to nearby properties where I could access the beach, and he even walked along the beach all the way to the other side of Kilindoni with me to Juani! He called a boda boda (motorbike) for me when I had to get to Utende for scuba diving, and always greeted me when I arrived back at the property. He was there when I needed help or wanted company, but he was also kind and gave me space when I was looking for solitude. I felt very safe and welcomed as a solo female traveler.

It only has 3 rooms with amazing view and lovely staff. Our 3 year old daughter loved Ali who was so kind to play we her constantly. We stayed here 3 nights which was perfect because it is very secluded. Perfect for chill and some excursions. Food was lovely too. Thanks all!

The property is beautiful, food is delicious, and the staff was very kind. I highly recommend Butiama to anyone traveling abroad. Magida island was phenomenal because of their hospitality.

We went as a family with kids. Ofcourse value for money compared to those hotels near to the beach. Mafia is a big island but inhabitants is low. Having said that, this hotel was near to any basic amenities required. It is even just 5 to 7 minutes walk to the domestic airport. The staffs welcomed us very well and made our stay exceptionally perfect. They even organized good deal excursion, we all kids managed to see whale-shark and swim with them at Kilindoni which was 10 minutes drive from this hotel. Even snorkeling and blue-lagoon was amazing at Utende which was about 40 minutes drive. All transport was well provided and taken care of us. Looking forward to be back!
