We travelled with 3 different trains from Vienna to Obertraun in order to visit Hallstat. Unfortunately, the transportation wasn't very convenient for us. One of the trains that we had arranged was late and we had to wait two more hours in order to get the last train to Obertraun. We departed from Vienna at 8:00 and we arrived to Obertraun at 15:30! Obertraun was very close to Hallstat. Hallstat is a magical place but next time I would prefer to visit it by car.Guest review bySophia - 10.0

Stay in beautiful Obertraun instead of the overpriced and crowded Hallstatt! We stayed 3 nights in a lovely accommodation Haus Edelweiss, and following the recommendations of lovely host Nina, we spent one day walking from Obertruan to Hallstatt. Along the way, we saw this stone path going up the hill and we went up (very do-able hike), and it led to a very beautiful view of Hallstatt! We then went down the other way and continued walking towards Hallstatt, explored the beautiful village and took the ferry (Euro 12/pax) back to Obertruan. Next day, we walked a loop from Obertruan to Koppenwinlsee. The walk was very lovely and we saw tiny red strawberries everywhere! There was a restaurant after Koppenwinslee but I think it was closed on Mon-Wed (please check), and other days open for lunch & dinner, so time yourself to make it in time for lunch/dinner. We were stopping so often to admire the scenery that we missed their lunch time! It is better to visit during non-summer to enjoy Austria.Guest review byRaySingapore - 10.0

We liked Obertraun because it was an easy 40 minute walk to Hallstatt and after spending a day there, we could get away from the crowds and numerous shops for some peace and quiet in Obertraun. Obertraun has unobstructed views of the beautiful mountains. We didn’t particularly like having only one restaurant in Obertraun open for meals. Obertraun is great spot for tourists and people who like hiking in Dachstein area. The town itself is not so big and crowdy. There is one supermarket and only few restaurants in the town but Hallstatt and other towns are not far away by car. The location is just perfect! lake Hallstatt is right behind the hotel and literally less than a min walk away. A lovely lake side play area for kids too ... You can take a local ferry to go to Hallstatt side from behind the hotel and avoid the driving/parking hassle near the main tourist parking areas. The hotel is right next to the train station and bus stop, very convenient. Even that, it is still a very quiet and calm place. The owner is very helpful. We left our backpack in the morning after checked-out and picked it up in the afternoon after a perfect hike. It has a better value of money to stay in Obertraun than Hallstatt market town.
