A "Hidden gem".
A "Hidden gem". Volcano country is about an hour's drive from the city, through a rural countryside that is well worth seeing. There are many lakes, where the locals constantly visit for outdoor camping, sailing and hiking (the water is too cold for swimming). A surprising ethnic mix of peoples (Spanish, Chinese, German and indigenous "Indian") with accompanying blend of architectural styles and their enclaves, and a blend of food choices that can be enjoyed by almost everyone. Our stay at the Sonesta Hotel was fabulous, with personal service everywhere and very comfortable accommodations.
