SHANGRI LA is a must destination.
SHANGRI LA is a must destination. Actually Yunnan Province is a must. Every town is so beautiful and exotic.. a dream for the eyes and for the photographers! 3 days per town is a minimum, there is so much to see and the people are really friendly... For me this place is over rated .
For me this place is over rated . Firstly this place is very much " designed" to attract tourism. If it is not for the unique temples , buildings and old villages of the Tibetian, their religion influence internal and to the community there which existed many decades ago, the Nepahai Plains, ShangriLa has not much to offer for tourist. Many business commercialise focuses on food and local delicacies. There are not many heritage location or attractive places to visit. My experience was of the old town mostly and two excursions one to a local monastery and the other to a national park Potatso about half hour away. The old town is pedestrian so that was good. Shangri-La is a beautiful town, a little slice of Tibet in Yunnan. You can experience Tibetan architecture and culture without having to get a permit for Tibet proper. Unfortunately, the city is very high altitude. We got altitude sickness pretty badly and had to leave after one night. There was heating and electric mattress to keep us warm. The location is great, very close to the ancient city and they offered us a free pick up from the train station, which was really kind! They don’t offer breakfast but there are plenty of restaurants nearby, but the streets are freezing in the morning, so it’s important to wear warm clothes! Vivien kindly picked us up at the airport and drove us to her wonderful homestay in the paradise now known Shangri-la. We had the most wonderful time and have memories that will last us a lifetime. The hotel is on the west side of the old city and only a 2 minute walk away. Rose organised a taxi from / to the railway station which helped us a lot.
