Puerto Humo is an out-of-the-way jewel. After traveling down a long dusty road for more than 10 km, we came to a large cattle ranch bordering the extensive wetlands of the western bank of the Tempisque River. Upon entering the gate to the ranch one enters the main dairy, complete with cattle pens, tractors, and an arrangement of farm equipment. Luckily we were directed to continue on past a second set of gates and the working dairy and beef cattle ranch became a luxury hotel. Our knowledgeable and very attentive guide for our visit, Kenneth, greeted us, checked us in and led us to our room. The room overlooked miles of savanna like flat-lands dotted with white cattle and surrounded by tree covered hills that faded into the distance. This story could continue but time is short. Let's simplify. Wetland and upland birding? Yes. River cruise that made us think of how Disney was inspired? Yes. Great meals by Kenya in a beautiful dining room? Yes. A special trip to find Scarlet Macaws? Yes. This place will make you feel you've been on a river cruise and safari while being cared for by great people. Bring your appetite, your desire for a unique Costa Rica adventure, and your mosquito repellent. We'll be back prepared with binoculars and bug spray!
