Cute little town near the airport. Probably not a destination, but, if you have a night to kill before flying out, it's fine. Otherwise, there isn't anything I know of to draw visitors. We did more in San Antonio than we expected to do.
We did more in San Antonio than we expected to do. The church in the center of town was welcoming, and there are a lot of restaurants with good food and service. The bussing to other areas (San Jose and Heredia) is well marked and has an appropriate schedule. Plus, the area felt safe to walk after sunset. For us La Rivera is a take off and arrival point, so the easy airport access is important. It is an easy walk to a phone store or Pali supermarket for some basics, and the local pista, church and park give you a safe introduction to Costa Rica. There's a small swimming pool, but quite OK. Good breakfast. Excellent restaurant/panaderia/ coffee shop open all day until 10pm. Friendly, helpful staff. The free shuttle to the airport took 20 minutes. It leaves the hotel on the hour, and from the airport on the half hour. It is 600m (yes 600m) from the AVIS car rental office at airport but not under flight path so minimal noise. The garden is so beautiful, the rooms, restaurant and pool are simple but ample and clean.
