The old town is cute and well connected with other villages via the train station. We could walk to a beer garden 30 minutes away in the next town (across the river) and then return by train. If like me, you are interested in the 12-13th century Holy Roman Empire and its Staufer emperors, do NOT miss this place. And even if you aren't a Staufer fan, this is a great place to learn about them--second only to Palermo, Italy, where the great Frederick II, his father and first wife are buried. I was surprised by how much is left of the Wimpfen castle, which most of the Staufers visited from time to time, and where, in 1235, Frederick II had his famous meeting with his wayward son, King Henry VII of Germany, which resulted in Henry being consigned to a dungeon it Italy, where he committed suicide. This was a surprise but was a pleasant one. The hotel was comfortable, very clean and had all we needed (except a kettle) in the room.
