‘The City of Three Rivers’
Known as the City of Three Rivers, Passau is a beautiful German town in Lower Bavaria crossed by the Danube, Ilz and Inn rivers. Situated near the Austrian border, this university city is home to the biggest cathedral organ in the world with 17,774 pipes and 233 registers.
Built in 1688 by the Italian architect Carlo Lurago, the Baroque St. Stephen's Cathedral has frescoes and paintings by JM Rottmayr. Featuring classic European architecture, the historic Old Town of Passau has small cobbled alleys with picturesque Bavarian cafes and restaurants, as well as a Neo-Gothic tower. You can enjoy a cruise on the Danube River or wonder around the medieval houses that are modified into galleries.
Set between the Danube and Ilz, the 13th-century Castle of Passau was the bishops’ residence for several centuries. Travellers can visit the fortress of Oberhaus and discover interesting museums with potteries, sculptures and paintings.

I was surprised at how much there was to see and do in this charming medieval town. We stayed for 4 nights which felt just right for visiting the castle, the Virgin Mary pilgrimage church, taking an afternoon boat ride on the Crystal ship, visiting the glass museum, and walking along the cobblestone streets to visit shops, art galleries, cafes, and bars. If we had more time I would have probably used the spot as a jumping off point for other local towns. We did a lot of walking to see the gorgeous views of the 3 rivers. Passau is a gem! Wonderful architecture, beautiful laid back ambience, great array of cafes , bars and restaurants and the overwhelming sense of the cultural heights that humanity can achieve. Public smoking is very off putting and makes outdoor seating challenging. Enjoyed the climb to the Veste Oberhaus and visiting Old Town; many shops closed on Sundays. Lovely colorful buildings and friendly people.Guest review byJulie - 4.0
Not as great as advertised.
Not as great as advertised. The old city center is quite nice. The views of the rivers are nice too. Worth a day trip if you're in the neighborhood. Parking situation sucks. There are parking garages that actually close from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. We got up at 4 a.m. to get on the road early to beat the traffic when we noticed the garage being closed. It's the first time it ever happened to us. No way to get in and anywhere near your car. It was 10.30€ for a day. It was the Parkhaus Wöhrl. By the way you can't pay by debit card and you should have the right amount of money with you. If you put in 50€ you don't get any change back! WTF?! If you want to be able to access your car 24/7 you have to find a garage that doesn't close for the night. There is one for currently 35€ a day. We particularly loved the Dom and the midday organ concert. Sorry to have missed the Obervasten, but it was soooo hot when we were there that we opted for the Passauer Erlebnisbad (PEB) instead. In Passau, one can walk just about everywhere, but I'd take...
In Passau, one can walk just about everywhere, but I'd take a taxi from the train station to your hotel. We loved Sello's cafe near St. Paul's church and The Ratskeller near the town hall. It was fun to look at the river cruise ships parked right along the village docks. Don't miss the hike to the old castle across the river as there is a spectacular view of the town from there.Guest review byRickUnited States

The location was central and handy to walk to everything in the town, and it was only a 10-minute walk from the main train station. It was also a similar distance to the main bus hub where we took a bus to Passau-Landau to take a boat cruise down the Danube River.
