‘The City of Three Rivers’
Known as the City of Three Rivers, Passau is a beautiful German town in Lower Bavaria crossed by the Danube, Ilz and Inn rivers. Situated near the Austrian border, this university city is home to the biggest cathedral organ in the world with 17,774 pipes and 233 registers.
Built in 1688 by the Italian architect Carlo Lurago, the Baroque St. Stephen's Cathedral has frescoes and paintings by JM Rottmayr. Featuring classic European architecture, the historic Old Town of Passau has small cobbled alleys with picturesque Bavarian cafes and restaurants, as well as a Neo-Gothic tower. You can enjoy a cruise on the Danube River or wonder around the medieval houses that are modified into galleries.
Set between the Danube and Ilz, the 13th-century Castle of Passau was the bishops’ residence for several centuries. Travellers can visit the fortress of Oberhaus and discover interesting museums with potteries, sculptures and paintings.
The Austrian city of Salzburg is about 110 km and Linz Airport is 64.5 km away. Booking.com offers a variety of hotels and guest houses in Passau and the nearby cities of Salzweg, Thyrnau and Kellberg. The Central Railway Station of Passau has trains to Vienna, Budapest, Amsterdam and London.

Not as great as advertised. The old city center is quite nice. The views of the rivers are nice too. Worth a day trip if you're in the neighborhood. Parking situation sucks. There are parking garages that actually close from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. We got up at 4 a.m. to get on the road early to beat the traffic when we noticed the garage being closed. It's the first time it ever happened to us. No way to get in and anywhere near your car. It was 10.30€ for a day. It was the Parkhaus Wöhrl. By the way you can't pay by debit card and you should have the right amount of money with you. If you put in 50€ you don't get any change back! WTF?! If you want to be able to access your car 24/7 you have to find a garage that doesn't close for the night. There is one for currently 35€ a day. We particularly loved the Dom and the midday organ concert. Sorry to have missed the Obervasten, but it was soooo hot when we were there that we opted for the Passauer Erlebnisbad (PEB) instead. In Passau, one can walk just about everywhere, but I'd take...
In Passau, one can walk just about everywhere, but I'd take a taxi from the train station to your hotel. We loved Sello's cafe near St. Paul's church and The Ratskeller near the town hall. It was fun to look at the river cruise ships parked right along the village docks. The unit is large, the bed comfortable, the wifi OK, the kitchen well equipped and there plenty of hot water. Check-in was a little like a treasure hunt but all the instructions worked perfectly. The location is perfect - the unit is beside a set of stairs leading up from the Danube, right in the middle of the historic, cobbled altstadt and there's a great cafe in the same building.
