Out of a Fairytale
The half-timbered buildings, cobbled streets and brightly painted façades of medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber wouldn’t be out of place in a fairytale. Several fantastical films have been set in this gem on the scenic Romantic Road, passing from Würzburg to Füssen via Bavaria’s most enchanting towns.
Uniquely designed gates allow access to the historic centre through walls partly covered with tiled roofs. Walking along the walls offers a different perspective of the town’s colourful flowers, step gables and towers. The town hall has the tallest tower, whose far-reaching views include the large Marktplatz, home of the Christmas market. The Christmas Museum is a year-round winter wonderland, as is the shop of Käthe Wohlfahrt, the internationally renowned German Christmas decoration producer.
On a different note, the Crime Museum houses medieval torture instruments including a ducking stool. Holy Blood and Last Supper altarpieces form the focal point of towering St James’ Church, a stop on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route.
In the River Tauber valley outside the centre are lush gardens, one containing Toppler Castle, a bizarre structure resembling a house on a tower. Also in the valley is a double-arched stone bridge.

This is a very touristy place, but we enjoyed our stay. Get out early in the morning to have your photos taken in the best spots without lots of people from the bus tours in the background. It is a picturesque city with a unique experience, somewhat allowing an impression of how life was in the medieval ages. Also the surrounding area is great for walks. It is very interesting to explore this city and dive into medieval history in the medieval crime and justice museum (which I would highly recommend, to get the right primer to the Rothenburg experience. Just be aware that there are very, very many tourists. This also means you might want to pick your restaurants carefully... There are very nice restaurants, but some might just look nice and offer just mediocre meals - as expected for tourist magnets. Overall I was positively surprised that such a gem still exists. I visited Rothenburg 14 years ago & couldn't wait to get back. This time I brought my 2 adult children who just loved it & will be bringing their children one day. Very sorry to hear Anneliese Frieze had passed away. Lovely lady. We walked the whole town, did lots of fantastic shopping. My son & daughter climbed the town hall tower & did the Night watchman walk, which they thoroughly enjoyed. We had our dinners at our hotel, Gasthaus Alter Keller & loved the food & great staff. Whilst the town is always full of visitors from all over the world, it’s a magical place, so do visit. Over the past 40 years this must have been my 8th or 9th visit and it never fails to disappoint. A remarkable town.
A remarkable town. We arrived knowing nothing about it and were stunned at what a beautiful place it is, possibly the most complete medieval town I've every seen. We only had one evening there, so I felt on another trip I could stay longer and see more.Guest review byDavidSlovakia
