    Charming rural village.

    Charming rural village. The Dorpsmuseum is interesting and gives a realistic experience of the hard working life of the people in the area , it is built around a refurbished windmill. There are places to eat, a very well stocked supermarket with daily fresh bread, brotchen , cakes and pastries and a weekly fresh fish seller on Thursdays. Most days you can watch the villagers play Bosseln, a form of street bowls which takes place up and down the Main Street. One of the local players is a world champion and plays in Ireland and Scotland The village is close enough to visit other worthwhile places in the area, a must for anyone is Greetsiel, a beautiful old fashioned fishing village. Also worth a visit is Norden with its busy Monday outdoor market, Tea museum and beautiful church. Aurich, Emden, Norddeich and Grosse Meer are definitely worth visiting and if you’ve time, a boat trip over to any of the beautiful Ostfriesen Islands. Most of Ostfriesland is reclaimed polder land, so windmills and dykes and ditches are everywhere, just like in Holland. It is flat and very easy to get around on bicycles. The cycle trails are safe and in most cases segregated from the main roads. You can hire bikes both traditional and electric in many places. It is a rural farming community and the locals are fiercely proud of their heritage. In many areas there are local eggs for sale from Ostrich to quail as well as the usual chicken eggs and in Munkeboe you can even buy potatoes and eggs from a vending machine! The only slight thumbs down was the quantity of farm traffic disturbing the peace. Every day from 0700 until 2100 during harvesting season. However this is to be expected in a farming community and adds to the charm!
