Historical and gorgeous. Lots to see. Food is amazing and cheap. Everything is walkable. Dont need too much time to explore all of Alcala. Highly suggest the empanada place and visiting the Cathedral. There were also some travelling shows going on in the square that seemed interesting. It has the oldest university in Spain, an Archbishop's palace, a cathedral and is the birthplace of Cervantes - the author of Don Quixote. We visited in the middle of a heatwave so unfortunately we couldn't explore as much as we would have liked. The historic centre is fascinating, with many beautiful buildings, including the old University and the cathedral with its spectacular reliquary. Calle Mayor is a lively shopping street with plenty of restaurants and tapas bars under its shady ancient arcades (apparently the longest such street in Spain?). The staff were pleasant and helpful and the room and the breakfast were great and were what I had paid for- Only location issues were the reason for my stay not being perfect. I was only there for one night and needed to be in Madrid to meet people at the airport the next day. Alcala de Henares is a UNESCO city, which means its historically significant as not only a university city but a city of monuments. It's easy to get around on foot, and it preserves the arched walkway and numerous plazas to explore. We took an easy train from Madrid (approx. $8 for two people) Chamartin Station to downtown Alcala. Easy enough access to Barajas Airport. Lovely staff , lovely accommodation , bed so comfortable, very clean . Best of all our dogs were made so welcome, thank goodness their weight and size wasn’t an issue as with some hotels, thank you so much for that Everything was in walking distance, plenty of places to eat . Close to the historic university (next door, more or less). A few minutes walk from the bus stop that connects with the Airport. Reception, breakfast and bar staff were very friendly, nothing to fault with the staff. I didn't go for the buffet breakfast, though it looked very good. I went for a coffee and some toast separately at a very reasonable price.
