A 7,000 Year Old Mediterranean Jewel

Surrounded by the sandy Costa Blanca beaches and the crystalline waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Alicante has a rich heritage built over thousands of years. Alacant (as it's known in Valencian) has a deep history ranging from the first tribes that arrived at the slopes of Mount Benacantil to Greeks, Romans and Moors. Nowadays, this modern city features a bustling harbor, great Spanish nightlife, charming old streets and modern beach resorts.

Overlooking the city from the top of Mount Benacantil, the Castle of Santa Barbara was built during Islamic rule in the 9th century.     We have been travelling each year to Alicante for the last 15 years and we love it. It is a lovely city with a beautiful beach. It has an authentic Spanish feel to it and the wonderful restaurants are too numerous to count. You have the Old Town which comes alive at night with lots of bars and restaurants, the same in the streets leading to the 'Mushroom Street' and the recently refurnished Marina. The jewel in the crown however is the fantastic beach, with the added bonus that this year the sunbeds were at a reduced price( 24euros - 2beds and umbrella). There is also the tram which can take you as far as Benidorm and all the towns in between.

    We liked how close everything was in the old town, beach, supermarkets, bars, restaurants, market if you want a relaxing holiday it's perfect. However Alicante is a big place if you like to walk and there is much much more to see and do.

    We have stayed in Alicante before on short visits. It is a great city, a laid back version of Barcelona, with a variety of places to see and enjoy. We did a walking tour this time and discovered even more about the city's history and culture. Castille St Barbara is worth a visit and the interior of San Nicholas cathedral is stunning. Pop into the impressive Town Hall to see the Salvador Dali statue on a square with great cafes. The harbour walk past the Casino is pleasant, with a stop off at Samoa Cafe del puerto for a cocktail. We ate in Nueve Pizzeria, a modest but welcoming family run eaterie, excellent pizzas and friendly service.

    Alicante is a fabulous town and I would recommend anyone to visit it. The transport is excellent, The restaurants are very good and not a rip off compared to some locations I have visited. The town beach is OK, but we chose to hop on the tram and visit San Juan Playa, which has a wonderful beach. Visited the castle on a very hot day, which is interesting and has impressive views from up on high.

    Warm friendly city.

    Warm friendly city. Parking can be difficult, but there are many underground car parks very reasonably priced. The city is very clean and well kept. Plenty of places to enjoy a snack or a four course meal. There are no shortage of taxis to take you around, and they are very reasonably priced.

    A very nice city with a lot of history, nice food, friendly people and of course with amazing beaches. I went with the purpose of just enjoying the beach and the sun and ended up finding a lot about the history of the city, meeting amazing people, tasting delicious food and beer and basically falling in love with the region. It definitely make me want to come back and also discover other cities and towns on the south of Spain. I recommend doing a guided tour on the first days of your stay because, independently of the guide they will always tell you which places you should visit, which restaurants to try, what kind of activities to do, which beaches to visit and how to get there. It really opens up your possibilities. Alicante was definitely a positive surprise for me and I truly recommend a visit.

    The apartment was very clean and very quiet, and compact. The best thing was waking up next to a big window with a huge view of the sea and the sunrise streaming in, with a coffee from the machine. It is a quiet area with a nice beach nearby. Not many restaurants, but only a 6 minute tram ride to the bustle of the Alicante sea front. So it was the perfect formula, out in the city for drinks and food, then home to tranquility and a good sleep, followed by a glorious way to wake up the next morning.

    Nice and comfortable hotel. Quick and easy communication with hotel staff. We liked the mini kitchenette in the room and the complementary water bottles, tea and coffee. The room was cosy and modern. Double bed was also good. In summer you can use the small swimming pool on the rooftop. Hotel is situated in a quiet neighbourhood and you can walk to the city centre of Alicante in around 15 minutes. We parked the rental car in the car park of the hotel.

    Staff really friendly & helpful, nice pool area, great little bar serving good selection of food & drinks throughout the day & into the evening. Although it's on the outskirts of Alicante & by a main road, there are good & regular bus connections to city centre/beach. Would definitely stay again when visiting family in Alicante.

    Located in the heart of the city with plenty of things going on around the area. We took a bus from the Airport to Alicante which dropped us very close to the Hotel late at night but felt safe walking in the area. Breakfast was very good and more than adequate to keep us going for the day.
