Our stay here was one of the top highlights of our trip. Both my kids, 20y and 18y, say that the baths were their favourite experience of the whole 25 day holiday. They exceeded our expectations hugely and all three of us will definitely be on the lookout for our next floatarium (high salt pool) opportunity. Staff at the hotel were super welcoming and kind. We arrived late and they were very accommodating. They even booked us for dinner at the restaurant next door, Quatro Hojas, which was AMAZING. Honestly the best meal any of us has EVER had anywhere. Little did we know it is a Michelin star restaurant. The hotel and rooms were very spacious and comfortable. They overlooked a courtyard (modern but done in an old world style). We didn't get to spend enough time in Almeria other than driving through. What we saw looked very beautiful - old buildings well preserved, lots of character. We want to go back!

FAQs about hotels in Almería

The Moorish Watchtower

Almería lies on the Mediterranean coast of Andalusía, overlooked by the old Moorish citadel or ‘Alcazaba’. It offers sandy beaches, rocky coves, clear waters, and the typical friendliness of southern Spain. Its urban pattern blends Moorish legacy, medieval buildings, modern architecture, and colourful narrow streets.

It was founded in the mid-10th century by the Caliph of Cordoba, and was named ‘Al-Mariy-yat’ or ‘the watchtower’, as it was part of the coastal defences of the Caliphate. After internal divisions in the Caliphate and Christian crusades, the city finally surrendered to the Catholic monarchs a few years before the first trip of Columbus. A range of hotels in Almeria’s city centre will allow you to enjoy this magic atmosphere from a close distance.

The Cathedral of St Mary of the Incarnation was originally a mosque, and was built resembling a fortress, in order to offer resistance to pirates. The nearby Gata-Nijar Cape Natural Park offers beautiful landscapes and beaches. Hotels on Almeria’s beaches are a popular choice, while a variety of accommodation is also available in the surrounding villages of Roquetas de Mar, Aguadulce, and San José.

The city is serviced by Almería Airport, a local railway station, and a bus station. Ferry services to Tunis and the Spanish enclave of Melilla are also available.

Almería city is compact and easy to get around on foot.

Almería city is compact and easy to get around on foot. It is very Spanish, something that as a Spanish-speaker I appreciate. In addition to the places usually highlighted in guides, we very much enjoyed el Museo del Realismo Español Contemporáneo which had two temporary exhibitions in addition to its excellent permanent collection. The Enclave Arqueológico de la Puerta de Almería is also worth a visit to view the excavated gate and walls of the early Moorish city, together with some interesting Roman remains. The range of restaurants available is huge. Our favourites were La Consentida Braseria; Restaurante Quatro Hojas, and Almedina Baraka (close to the Alcazaba).

Almeria was so unexpected we have passed through on many occasions and didn't realise what we were missing. The people of Almeria are among the friendliest I have ever met in a City or anywhere for that matter. We can not wait to return and explore as much as we can. Because of our circumstances we mainly ate in the hotel. But we did on several occasions eat out. There is a very good Asian and a very good Spanish restaurant very close by and a lovely friendly cafe across the road from the hotel. For those like fast food the 5min walk to the Mediterranean Shopping Centre would make you very happy. There is an excellent bus service to travel around the city.

Almeria struck me as not a traditional holiday resort.

Almeria struck me as not a traditional holiday resort. It is a working port. I liked the way the city is modelled on a smaller Barcelona. I would not recommend the resort for children or teenager but very much for adults. When asked the question about the vibe of Almeria, I said cultural as I found it very Spanish and Spanish speaking, reverting to school girl French to make myself understood. It took me a while to find good restaurants close to the hotel.

Almeria is a very pleasant city, however, lacking in any tourist information for the visitor. Bus service was excellent. Bars and restaurants were good providing tapas with drinks, however the choice of actual restaurants was limited. We found two Italian and one fish restaurant, everywhere else just supplied tapas, which is great during the day but would have been nice to eat different food in the evening. The Cathedral and Fortress were stunning.

There are things to see and do in Almeria - just like anywhere - but our visit was short and we had no intention of walking about too much. We found it easy enough to find restaurants/cafes to suit both for lunch & dinner and indeed again for breakfast, away from the hotel. It was a "get away from home" short trip. As such, no recommendations to offer for Almeria. Our 2nd time there but we have no intention of rushing back.

Beautiful little town, you can walk everywhere.

Beautiful little town, you can walk everywhere. We went on the little train which was only four euros for an hour's trip around the city, well worth it. Also got our bearings. Plenty of places to eat and drink, lovely tapas bars which are reasonably priced. English not widely spoken but they do make the effort ! Great coffee, again very reasonably priced. rarely paid more than four euros for two coffees....and it's good coffee too. All in all we were very impressed with Almeria town and will come back.

A nice and comfortable apartment. Perfect location to see, hear, and feel the sea! Then there is the downstairs restaurant, Buono. Normally I don't eat pizza in Spain, just because I also love Spanish food, but ended up going several times to Buono. Try the pizzas under locales and regionales sections, and don't miss that one with pecorino and salvia. Thank you Francesco for having us at your beautiful place. Best wishes to you and your colleagues from Buono. Definitely I will come back to Almeria! :)

Fantastic hotel with traditional lobby and 24-hour reception desk, right on the tree-lined Paseo de Almeria, five minutes walk from the centre of the old city. The rooms are super-clean, the beds super-comfortable, and the buffet-style continental breakfast in the salon downstairs was generous. The staff were very helpful, and provided a kettle at our request.
