FAQs about hotels in Merida

Small City with Impressive Roman Past

Mérida was founded as Augusta Emerita in 25 BC, the capital of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania. Located almost half-way between Madrid and Lisbon, it is nowadays an important historic centre, and the capital of the Spanish region of Extremadura. The ‘Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The city was founded in order to protect the Guadiana River pass, becoming the largest city on the Iberian Peninsula. Visigoths, Moors, the Christian ‘reconquista’, and the Napoleonic invasion left their mark too, and the city is nowadays home to the most complete Roman remains in Spain.

Its historic centre displays a mix of all these cultures, with the Roman Theatre and the Roman Bridge standing out. The Alcazaba is the old fortress of Roman origin, successively rebuilt by Visigoths and Moors. Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque buildings, as well as typical cobbled streets complete the picture. Some of the most charming hotels and B&Bs in Mérida are located in the Old Town.

The easiest way to get to the city is flying in to Seville or Madrid, and then by train to the local railway station. Whether you’re searching the best hotels or budget accommodation, don’t miss the Mérida deals available on Booking.com!

Wow! Just so much to see. Surprised we hadn’t heard of Mérida until we were looking for somewhere to break our journey between Lisbon and Seville. One of the most walkable places we have ever been to. Loved it!

Fenomenal well-preserved Roman and Visigoth remains. Unexpected in a remote, not well-known part of Spain. People are extremely welcoming though their english language skills are limited! April should be the best time to visit!

A bit disappointing. Not a pleasant city for walking around.

A bit disappointing. Not a pleasant city for walking around. One day stop is enough. A bit overrated the monuments as well, comparing the price of visiting the amphitheatre with the Alhambra makes no sense at all. Also, a tall fence surrounds the monument, so you can't even have a look at it without paying.

The teatro Roman amphitheatre was lovely but the steps are made of fake stone. If you have been to the Colosseum this seems a bit tame. We found the Acueducto de los Milagros interesting as well as the Casa del Mitreo de los Columbarios- the ruins of a Roman home. We were disappointed with the contents of the Alcazabar - the only thing of interest inside was the underground water cistern with steps leadinng down into it. It's more interesting from the outside

This has been a favourite stop-off for us on the way down and up Spain. The ground floor apartment (Superior Studio) is perfect for us. Effective aircon when very hot, decent and well equipped kitchenette (including fridge with freezer section), good shower, great location, clean and comfortable. Helpful and friendly staff. Secure garage facility. Really highly recommended. Thank you.

This hotel was amazing! It was a former 16th century Palace, now a 5 star hotel, situated right on the Plaza de España with cafés and restaurants & a really vibrant atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. It was very reasonably priced too. We've told everyone we know to stay there and we can't wait to go back!

Just 10 minutes walking and you are at the Museo Romano and the Anfiteatro. That's the best part of Merida. Just under our balcony a lovely bar/restaurant. And 50 meter from Parador de Merida (the state owned traditional hotel)
