Nordic Daughter of the Baltic
Scratch beneath the small-town surface of Helsinki and you will find a cosmopolitan metropolis buzzing with a lively attitude and plenty of excitement. Beautiful city with great parks and restaurants and art, all very walkable. Lots of history, extremely clean, and easy to navigate. Finns are very polite if self-contained and it's a lovely place to explore a culture that appreciates sophistication and nature together in one place. Plus, it's very dog friendly! We did not come across anyone who did not speak English, and, when asked. would stop to help with directions. We did the hop on hop off bus (€27 each) which gave a good tour round. We also did the Royal line boat tour of the islands, (another €27)which was worth doing.. Helsinki centre is very walkable, mostly flat. Just wear decent shoes for the cobbled streets. Strongly advise using pedestrian signals when crossing roads. bicycles, trams and cars seem to come from nowhere!
