Ales is a vibrant little town which has grown where others have diminished! There are many places around to visit. Les Jardins de la Fontaine is a little oasis right in the centre of town. First impression was of an unpretentious but pleasant enough town. The river (Gard d'Ales?) is one of many which flow south from the Cevennes. This one is small compared with some of them, but you can see from the flood-defences that it sometimes swells massively. The hotel provided simple but comfortable rooms. The whole experience was lifted by the service provided by the maitre d’hotel, was absolutely charming and made every effort to look after all our needs, including storing our luggage for a few hours while we waited for our train.
