Located in the Provence of France, the charming city of Arles is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List thanks to its stunning Roman monuments and rich history. Home to the Roman baths of Constantine, the necropolis of Alyscamps and the Church of St. Trophime, Arles is a perfect example of a city perfectly combining the ancient with the modern. I visited Arles specifically to attend les Rencontres de la Photographie - a series of exhibitions scattered throughout the old sections of the town and it is a fabulous event, easy to walk between venues and to appreciate the whole tourist thing from the river to the park, the tower, the old factories, a number of the churches/monasteries/convents. Arles is a big city with the Roman architecture contained in the very centre. It has good restaurants (listed on TripAdvisor). We enjoyed the Art exhibitions and strolling around looking at the architecture. There is some nice shopping to be had and most boutique owners spoke English. We loved the Pizzeria near the Arena (right down the bottom of the hill) and Restaurant La Pergula was reasonably priced with good food. We liked the street cafe (with its large mosaic of Van Gogh inside), opposite the Tourist Information Office (where the people were very helpful). We did a Safari to the Camargue which was well worthwhile. It's difficult to park in the centre of Arles so take your walking shoes!Guest review byJacquelineFrance - 10.0

Wonderful apartment in Arles in a great locaation near the Rhone River and all the sites were within walking distance. The kitchen is very modern and well stocked. The living/dining room were very comforable and well appointed. The owner, Farida, was incredibly helpful throughout our stay with great restaurant and sightseeing recommendations. We had an auto accident prior to our arrival and Farida gave us great assistance in trying to communicate with the rental car company and was able to organize another auto for us. Arles is easy to walk around with a few inclines and cobbled roads. Most places of interest are within minutes of each other. A lot of cafes, restaurants and places to get an ice cream. A lot of independent shops with good quality wares. A delightful place, a lot of charm whether you want to follow in the steps of Van Gogh or not! We enjoyed the food and the people at Le QG, and Jardin des Arts. Getting to Arles by train from Montpellier is easy and just a short walk to get into Arles.Guest review byW-Smith - 8.0

Arles is a very interesting town for lovers of Van Gogh and also antiquities. All the places visited were interesting. Perhaps the Fondation Van Gogh isn’t worth visiting. There are only 2 paintings by Van Gogh and not much information. It is quite pretentious. The garden of the hospital is lovely. Having visited Arles previously on the trip we realised it was also very well located for exploring the entire town of Arles. There are bars and restaurants close by. The staff were very accommodating in allowing us to store our luggage both before and after check in which was extremely helpful.
