Besançon pleasantly surprised us.
Besançon pleasantly surprised us. We usually just passed through on our way to Dijon or Lyon, but stopping here was definitely worth it! The historic center has a wonderful atmosphere, highlighted by the Église Sainte-Madeleine de Besançon. Make sure to allow enough time for the local Museum of Archaeology and Fine Arts. The collection is extensive but well worth the time. The military fortifications around the city, including the Citadel (a UNESCO World Heritage site), were also an interesting highlight. The only downside is that the city is not a major tourist destination, so finding souvenirs can be a bit difficult, and even at the Citadel the selection is rather limited.Guest review byPetrCzech Republic - 6.0

I didn't have the time to visit most of the inner city, but from what I can tell it's rather average, somewhat well-kept but far from ambitious in its design. We stayed one night, on a last minute decision. The town is really attractive and although there is not a huge amount to do, it is a great place to wander. The Musee des Beaux arts is absolutely outstanding - a complete surprise. It rained more than was good this time. Get a pass for the tram. If there are more than one of you then get a pass each rather than putting all the credits on one pass. If it is running take the boat around the Boucle, preferably on a good day. Most of the captive animals have now been taken aways from the Citadelle and that is good, it wasn't right for the lions and tigers in there or the monkeys. Don't feel bad about the rabbits, guinea pigs and poultry - they love interacting with the public. The hen was really proud showing off her new chick. If the weather is such that you can eat outside then eat outside. The food is always good, it would be hard to get a bad or expensive meal in Besak. Use the trains to have a day in Montbeliard and visit the Peugeot Adventure at Sochaux. At Montbeliard Station get on the bus, route 3, about 3 euros each. We went to Besancon to visit a friend and had only time for a short walk around the city. We visited Victor Hugo's birthplace which was very informative, and we were delighted to see some Roman ruins preserved in the center of the city. For the type of hotel (on industrial area) and the price this is much much better than the usual hotel chains you find in such areas in France. Nice color full room, with all we need. No noise of cleaning staff in the morning, free parking, supermarket nearby, noon (late) checkout, clean, good bed, elevator, good badroom. The rooms were spotless and beds comfortable. Parking at property was fully booked but there was an easy parking option around the corner which was very close to the hotel which was free from 7pm until 9am. There was a little shop 20m from the hotel entrance which was very convenient. It was a short walking distance to the centre of the village.
