Out of a Fairytale

Most visitors to Carcassonne come here for one thing: to see its fairytale, UNESCO World Heritage-listed castle sitting majestically on a hill east of the city.

Spectacularly lit at night, this Cité is a restored medieval fortress with 52 towers, 2 outer walls covering almost 2 miles, and a drawbridge providing access to a keep. Twice daily there are medieval jousting displays between the walls. This intriguing castle has enchanted so many that it has appeared in novels, films and even spawned a board game.

Some Carcassonne hotels, bars and restaurants can be found in the Cité but the majority are in the Ville Basse below. The stone Old Bridge, also lit at night, links it to the city centre over the Aude River.

Central Carcassonne also has its own sights including the fine art museum and the cathedral with its impressive stained-glass windows. But its best feature is the South of France way of life, with relaxed bars and pavement cafes, some serving the local speciality – cassoulet. Other slow-paced attractions include boat trips along the Canal du Midi and visiting villages like Minerve in the surrounding hills.

Served by national and low cost carriers, Carcassonne Airport is a mere 3 miles out of the city centre.

    The visit to the castle was amazing inside and out.

    The visit to the castle was amazing inside and out. A short walk into the Bastide (New Cite) is lovely finding numerous cafes, shops and cathedrals. Some great go to opportunities! Useful to know that some restaurants close on a Wednesday so you can plan were to eat.Great contrast between the old and new cite.Our favourite place to eat lunch was Au Petit Brunch. Everything was great for walking.

    Carcassonne is a beautiful city with lots of fabulous restaurants and lively bars as well as the historical epicentre inside the castle walls (Citè) itself which was my favourite part! We went as couples but there was alot of families there also both young children with options for them too. Highly recommend the Cassoulet and some local wines 🍷 we would love to return again

    Carcasssonne is magnificent.

    Carcasssonne is magnificent. The castle, ramparts and buildings are outstanding. But beware, its a typical tourist trap. 100's of restaurants all selling cassoulet. Lots of shops selling souvenirs, clothes and local goodies.

    Lovely castle , restaurants bars and transport links are brilliant . Fantastic underground carparks , lovely canal , easy to walk around . Be careful in some parts of town of the beggars drunks and druggies but if you don’t interact with them they don’t talk to you .

    We stayed in a hotel within the walls and that was lovely (Auberge des Lices) and we visited the old town as well as the city. So much to see and do! This was our second visit and we were not disappointed (other than the note below). A slight caveat as one of party was disabled is that the walled City is not particularly disabled friendly. Those who stay in the other lovely hotels are afforded luggage transfer but those less fortunate with mobilty have to struggle waith bags and have to be able to walk quite a few hundred metres to get to a gate other than the main entrance which is the nearest to the Cite car parks. A golf cart type facility would I am sure assist even if there was a charge... Just saying :-)

    Small city easy to find your way around.

    Small city easy to find your way around. Bus to the airport is not very frequent and info about same is non existent, taxis are also very hard to aquire and there doesn't seem to be too many available.

    Beautifully restored townhouse in a quiet location , minutes walk from the old city . I believe just 5 rooms .The king suite was incredibly spacious and tastefully fitted out . Good view of the walled city . Very close to bus stop and short walk to train station. Mark , the host , was so helpful, recommending places to visit , restaurants . Breakfast was amazing , fresh , locally sourced and, different each day . Definitely would recommend. Forget about the hotels in the city , enjoy an authentic experience in the townhouse .

    Fantastic location in the old town of Carcassonne, only a 20 min walk to the fortified medieval city, a 10 min walk from the train station (or a shuttle bus from the airport) and next to a beautiful square with a fountain plus restaurants, cafes and a mini Carrefour! The apartment is spacious, the beds were comfortable, the shower worked well and it was great value for money,

    Nice hotel in a very good location just at the bottom of the hill below carcasonne castle. We were a family of 3 and stayed in a room with 2 queen sized beds. It was perfect for us with plenty of room. Nice pool which is in the sun all day. Staff were very nice - continental breakfast was also good. Would stay here again.

    A beautiful, modern, clean room, with views of the old city wall from the bathroom. Breakfast was beautifully presented and plentiful. The garage parking was a bonus, we parked up and walked into the old town and the centre easily. The hosts were very welcoming.
