A Labyrinth of History and Architecture
Chartres is a French medieval town in the Eure-et-Loir department, about 90 km from Paris. Home to historic 16th-century buildings, half-timber houses, narrow streets and large squares, this well preserved city will amaze you with its beauty.
The 13th-century Cathedral of Chartres is the city’s main landmark and a famous site of Christian pilgrimage. Featuring 18th-century stained-glass windows and a stunning façade with bas-relief sculptures and stone statues, this UNESCO World Heritage is one of the most important Gothic cathedrals in France.
On the back side of the Cathedral, travellers will find a Grass Labyrinth, date back to around 1200. According to the tradition, pilgrims used to go to the centre of the labyrinth in order to receive the grace of God.
The Massacre Bridge is one of the bridges crossing the Eure River, which flows right to the heart of the old part of the city. Chartres has also beautiful churches like the St. Aignan and the St. Martin-au-Val.

The cathedral was absolutely magnificent as expected but the sound and light show at night was an amazing surprise. Was very quiet on a rainy September day. Maybe visit a bit earlier in the season, the city looks like it would have a good vibe. The Old Town is lovely.
The Old Town is lovely. Plenty of places to eat, friendly atmosphere, easy to walk around. Check out the Tourist Information office (great building), and of course, the Cathedral. Obviously beautiful, inside and out. We usually use Chartres as on overnight stop for travelling further south and it's always a pleasant town to visit. The Son et Lumiere display on the Cathedral and other locations around the town centre are always amazing. Such a beautiful place, especially the cathedral which is a must see inside and out. The shopping area is a delight with little streets going in all directions to find lots of smaller shops, especially the thrift stores. The restaurants are very nice and reasonably priced for the quality of the food and I highly recommend the Cafe Blue right next to the cathedral. A perfect place for great food in a great location. The late evening illuminations is an absolute must see, even if it doesn't start until dark. Get there early and book the little Dotto type train, which will take a leisurely drive around the best locations and buildings which participate in the illuminations. It takes about 45 minutes for less than €10. A great place to visit or better still, stay for a week or even a weekend. I will definitely be back!Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

The ambiance of the old part of Chartres is lovely ...beautiful buildings, good restaurants and pedestrianised. The cathedral is outstanding, and the tresor well worth visiting. We took the little train near the cathedral at night to view many of the 20 son et lumiere sites. The 'Chartres 1000 ans 360 degree spectacle' is well worth a visit.Guest review byCarolFrance

We had stayed here in June, and again in September, as an overnight enroute stop. Location is right in the middle of Chartres, convenient for the Old Town and the Cathedral. Private, gated parking is available, and at a fair price. The staff on both occasions were super, very helpful and very hard working. The rooms are clean and comfortable.
