Clamecy is a friendly and attractive town with a well-preserved medieval core. It is an ideal location for cycling along the Canal de Nivernais and into the surrounding countryside. It has a surprisingly wide range of eating places for such a small town. There is an interesting local museum with an impressive art and archaeological collection as well as a fascinating display about 'Les Flotteurs'. They were skilled woodsmen who floated rafts of firewood up to Auxerre and on to Paris - and who formed an interesting and quite radical rural subculture. I had a fairly dramatic stay in that I had mild sunstroke on my first day's cycling and was taken to the local hospital for a check-up by the paramedics. I was soon discharged but was impressed by their care and concern and that of French cyclists who stopped to help.Guest review byPhilipUnited Kingdom
