The Glamorous Parisian Riviera
The fashionable Normandy resort of Deauville is famed for its international film festival that attracts worldwide celebrities. The most famous names from the silver screen are immortalised on the entrances to changing rooms lining the wooden, beachfront boardwalk – the Promenade des Planches.
The beach itself is a long stretch of golden sand overlooked by exclusive residences, luxury hotels and the chic casino which is most spectacular at night. As you would expect of such a resort, Deauville also has a golf course, marina housing fancy yachts, and a racecourse. Some of France’s largest horse training facilities are here, and the surrounding area is full of thoroughbred studs.
One of these was once owned by the Strassburger family who lived in one of Deauville’s most beautiful houses – the Villa Strassburger. Its half-timbered elements and multi-angled roof are typical of the town’s architecture. Other similar examples include boutique shops and the Hotel Normandy, a historic property now owned by the Barrière group who also run the elegant Hotel Royal overlooking a seafront park.
In addition to these 5-star hotels, Booking.com offers holiday homes near Deauville Airport, and cheap apartments by the train station which also serves the Parisian Riviera town of Trouville across the River Touques.

I was in Deauville for the Bridge Festival, so chose the location for that reason. However, I would say that some of the restaurants in Deauville are not great value or quality and prefer to eat in Trouville where there is better choice and value in my opinion. It is all down to personal taste, obviously many wealthy Parisians and foreign visitors like to be in Deauville, for the beach and top hotels. Relative to Trouville it is quite smart, but Trouville is more lively and overall more interesting. Great place! Lots of restaurants and a lovely place to relax, that said it has plenty of things to do, a nice port, a world renowned boardwalk along a really long and wonderful beach and more including a swimming pool and other great sports facilities. Deauville is an upmarket seaside town, pleasantly twinned (other side of estuary) with Trouville, which is less affluent but still very nice. It’s a little pricey, but that comes with the territory. A beautiful, very upmarket seaside resort. If you are going to get run over in Deauville, it will probably be by a Ferrari or an Aston Martin! A great beach with a beautiful boardwalk.
