    The ramparts, waterways and gardens are interesting.

    The ramparts, waterways and gardens are interesting. It is a very small town with a market on Fridays. The walk along the channel to the sea is very pleasant and you can get the free bus back. It has a tourist office but English is not spoken and only 1 brochure in English. There are not many places to eat and we chose to self cater for various reasons. The local buses are free for 40km around so its a good way to see other places locally. The beaches are sandy, clean and vast with the shoreline a long way out so not so convenient for sea swimming.

    A sweet quiet village close to Calais.

    A sweet quiet village close to Calais. Found a fantastic restaurant (L'Eclusier) just up the road from our hotel beside a canal which we absolutely loved. Saturday morning market with clothes and fresh produce. Ideal stopover before catching the ferry from Calais the next day.

    The hotel "Face à la Mer", is at Petit Pont Philippe on the sea, with its historical black and white candy striped lighthouse. It is connected by a long canal (25 min walk) to the ancient town of Gravelines. You can walk around the perimeter and see the old walls and there is an arsenal and museum, plus a sculpture garden. I ate in the hotel each night (4) for convenience, after that there are plenty of other restaurants within walking distance. Not Michelin starred but good food, especially the ice-cream desserts. Usual shops close by, boulangerie, pharmacy etc. Petrol 10 mins in either direction

    We went for the Christmas market.

    We went for the Christmas market. Friday evening was disappointing but the Saturday night was great with lots of atmosphere. We didn't really look at the shops or bars when we were there. The town itself is fascinating as it is walled and has bags of history. There is also plenty of free parking. We would consider returning there to look at the museum and other interests there.... however, it will be in the warmth of summer!

    Room was small but acceptable though at a price similar to a main stream hotel. Breakfast was non existant, just juice and bread. Nothing at all was offered to either guest, either cereals or cooked food. Which was disappointing as a Booking.com review mentioned an excellent breakfast? We also enquired about Gluten free and a positve reply was given, however nothing was offered.

    Gravelines is a beautiful town, within easy access to many lovely beach towns, Cap Blanc-Nez and Belgium. The property is spacious, well equipped and the bed was comfortable. It has a large garden totally enclosed and a parking space. Shutters give privacy. Easy walking distance to the main square (big market on a Friday morning). Quiet neighbours on each side.

    The hotel is well located near the beach and the village centre, ideal for a nice walk along the beach or the canal. staff at the reception is very friendly. There's plenty of free parking space in the streets nearby.
