We arrived in late afternoon at hotel and toured island first in evening hours - great idea as less crowded and still light enough to wander the streets and alleys. Toured the abbey the next morning - around 11. Already getting crowded - should have started earlier. But well organized and flows well within the Abbey. A mesmerizing place that provides delights at every turn. This place is not recommended for people with mobility issues. Not only is it geared for people with the stamina to climb stairs and rather steep roads but the oppressive crowds make maneuvering, even for the able-bodied, difficult. One of the most beautiful locations of the French seaside, matched with one of the most spectacular Castle/Abby I have ever encountered. I would place this even with Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria. Absolutely stunning place with a very special Angelic energy. Would recommend everyone to go at least once in their life - however not very suitable for anyone with walking restrictions, buggies etc and at high season it is very busy. We only stayed a night, but that was enough to visit the abbey during a light and sound show in the evening. Dinner was at La Mère Poulard which was good but very expensive. There’s a reason why most visitors in summer camp in nearby areas and take the shuttle to MSM for day trips only. Great place to visit, easy to get to by parking in the main car parks and ideal to stay overnight in one of the hotels. Take the hotel’s written advice not to bring a suitcase, even with wheels. There are a lot of cobblestones, stairs, hilly terrain etc. Just bring what you can carry in a small backpack or similar. There are luggage lockers at Gare Montparnasse (near platform 24) to leave your suitcase if you take a train there. Staff were nice. The hotel accomodation is really clean and well maintained, its close to the entrance of the island.
