A Picturesque River City
Lyon is a gastronomic centre with a pretty architectural façade ranging from antiquity to modern day. Place Bellecour is centrally located between the Saône and Rhône Rivers in the 2nd arrondissement and opens out into major shopping streets.
On the banks of the Saône lies the district of Vieux Lyon, a great example of the Renaissance and full of museums such as the Lyon History Museum. Winding your way through the beautiful streets you can make your way up to the spectacular white-stone Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière and look down over the city.
There is a lot going on in the main park of Lyon, Parc de la Tête d'Or, which is home to a zoo of exotic animals as well as various sports facilities and a large lake for boating. Boats of a different description are docked on the banks of the Rhône River; they host parties late into the night.

I arrived on a Sunday and left the following Saturday so spent almost a week in Lyon. I bought a Lyon Card that was valid for four days and used it to gain free entrance to several museums and also used it extensively on busses, trams and the métro. Lyon has an excellent public transport system which is clean, reliable and safe. Fantastic choice of restaurants in the city - but you expect nothing less in France’s gastronomic capital! VERY difficult to find a “tabac” that sold postage stamps for outside France (yes, I’m of an older generation that still sends postcards). Seek out the “traboules” but PLEASE respect the notices asking you to be silent - remember that people live in the buildings. Take a river cruise, indulge yourself with some silk products and enjoy this fascinating city. I can’ wait for the Textile Museum to re-open after several years of renovations - I’ll definitely plan a second visit!Guest review byIanNetherlands - 10.0

Lots of nice walking around areas with churches and parks and cafes. Apparently civilized locals. Nice free zoo park and gardens,great basilica. Lots of alleyways. Plenty if nice supermarkets. Horrible, dirty city. There are better European locations to travel to. The old town is literally one street that will take you 15 minutes to walk through and back. The metro map is confusing, with no English translations anywhere. The entire city is under construction. The cathedral has beautiful architecture with French descriptions. Especially Georgi (I think he’s the owner) was a great help. Watch out, there is a notice that you cannot bring a camper/trailer and you really cant. We did but Georgi really went out of his way to help us fix it anyhow. We were with 3 young children and the garden was excellent for them to play after the long (long long) journey.
