Lovely city to visit, just go and try.
Lovely city to visit, just go and try. There was an amazing open market to explore (Tuesday) and we found some great places to eat. Only stayed a couple of nights, I would recommend 3 or 4. We traveled on Interrail and took a train direct from Paris Lyon to Montpellier Sud de France. It’s was fast about 3 hours. The station is out of town but we discovered that they are opening up a new line (Oct 2025) to link up with Montpellier station itself so you can change and not take a taxi or try you luck with a bus that could take 45mins. Lots of wonderful monuments and historical buildings to visit. Transport system excellent once you have got used to it. Clean and comfortable. A multitude of cafes to choose from. It is a marvellous city- stunningly beautiful with a chill, friendly and confident vibe. People are very kind to people with little spoken French and most speak quite good English. The food is great and prices reasonable. Being able to either walk everywhere or use the frequent, comprehensive trams makes exploration a pleasure. Newly renovated room with mini kitchen, it had only been open for 2 weeks when I visited. If you think about what it costs along the French Riviera on holiday, this was a fantastic option for me. Great garden where you could read a book or have breakfast. Secure parking in the basement, at a reasonable price. Short walk to supermarket which was useful as the area itself is run down and I felt unsafe when it was dark. Great old style decor: curtains with a pattern that looks like snake scales; wallpaper with designs that look like birds; the entrance is nice and has a red wall. A super plus: 2 bottle of water for free 🙂 The bathroom is excellent. Easy to find, lots of restaurants nearby. I liked that this was attached to a hotel so there was a front desk team to support us and provide assistance to our requests. One attendant was fluent in English and taught us some French words. The courtyard is nice, my partner and I spent time there.
