It's a very smart upmarket town with delightful shops. The Friday Market in central square was just wonderful. The Chateau and surrounding parkland are beautiful with spectacular views of the River Seine and Paris. I was already familiar with St Germain en Laye, but from years ago. It’s a lovely place to stay, and now the RER makes travel more convenient. There are also handy local buses. All was well except for whatever had to do with service and dinner + breakfast. Breakfast was a disaster. No more food, no personnel to ask to, everyone complaining but close to no reaction. Dinner : main course was cold and we waited for so much time before we could it. I would not recommend this place. We love St Germain-en-Laye with its history, chateau, market place, good shops and restaurants.The beautiful park with its views across to Paris and its flowery gardens which are beautiful in the Spring through Autumn. It is easy to stroll around and admire the buildings. The Musee Maurice Denis, in a former priory, is a short walk from the town centre and well worth a visit. We had dinner at Chez Lulu in Rue St Pierre and enjoyed a really good meal in a very pleasant ambiance. The service was attentive. Coffee is very expensive in the town! Saint-Germaint-en-Laye is great town to visit for a day or two. As well as the upmarket feel of numerous clothes shops, high quality patisseries and chocolatiers, the highlight is the Le Notre Terrace next to the chateau, with magnificent views of Paris in the distance.
