The Inspiration for Genius
Open-plan and open-minded, Cambridge is best known for university colleges dating to the 13th century. King’s College is the most popular, and its chapel choir is internationally famous. Although accessed from cobbled King’s Parade, it is best viewed from a punt on The Backs, the part of the River Cam behind.
Cambridge punting is an institution and gives great views of Queen’s College Mathematical Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs at St John’s College. Upstream is Jesus Green, site of an outdoor pool and a fantastic beer festival. Next to this is Midsummer Common, a park home to the annual Strawberry Fair (and the occasional cow). Opposite are the college boathouses - get up early to see the rowers in action!
Cows also roam the Mill Pond meadow, where the river leads south to Grantchester, a quaint village with a lovely cafe. Places to eat in Cambridge include riverside restaurants and typical English pubs like The Eagle, drinking hole of DNA founders Watson & Crick.
Cambridge shopping options include a daily market (in Market Square), the Grafton Centre and the exclusive Grand Arcade, the latest addition. The Scott Polar Museum and free Fitzwilliam Museum are 2 of many fantastic Cambridge museums.
Stansted Airport is connected by train to the city’s accommodation choices on Booking.com.

We stayed a 15 minute walk out of the centre of the town; its flat so it was easy. We only had one full day in the city, could have done with 3 days. Like all these cities, don’t drive into town; either book accommodation within 15 minute as we did or use the buses. A lovely city with stunning architecture, which I love. I had a fantastic lunch there at a terrace restaurant overlooking the river. I forget the name, but it is opposite Prezzo. I just could have done with more time to wander around more of the colleges and maybe go punting - half a day wasn't long enough.
