Chapel Stile has a nice pub (the Wainwrights Inn) and with a short further walk to Elterwater the Britannia Inn serves good food and ale. And both reached without much contact with the 'main' road. There is a lovely path from Chapel Stile through the centre of the Langdale Valley which takes you all the way to the New Dungeon Gill (about 2.25 miles), and you can walk further to the Old Dungeon Gill, have a drink and catch a bus back (1 an hour). If you fancy testing your nerve on Wrynose Pass and Hardknott pass then they are not too far away either. During our stay in Chapel Stile we really enjoyed hearing the birds singing every morning. We also enjoyed watching the swallows popping into the sheltered stairway from road to property front door to feed their young in the nest in the corner. Despite the popularity of the Lake District Chapel Stile still felt relatively quiet and relaxed. We really enjoyed our trip over to Grasmere although the roads are mainly single track and not designed for too much traffic. I walked my bike down the 25% gradient into Grasmere rather than trusting my brakes!Guest review byDavidUnited Kingdom
