Hidden gem is a very interesting choice of name for this property as in my experience of the house, there was no beauty and it definitely should be kept hidden from anyone looking for accommodation in County Durham! The location of the property is in a blacked out data and phone signal area and according to the Bureau of Statistics, the location has a seriously high crime rate. Both of these facts, the hosts neglects to list in his description. As for the crime rate, I can believe this as someone tried to break in whilst I was out. The door was damaged and a locksmith had to come and repair it. Mould has set in to the silicon around the bath, the beds and sofa are well worn out and there was a bin liner full of household waste left in the rear courtyard that was attacked by noisy foxes during the night. The host also fails to list in his description that he has a camera inside facing the front door, which I imagine breaches privacy laws. The property is a tacky residence that has signs of being neglected whilst trying to squeeze as much money as possible out of would-be renters. Avoid disappointment and steer clear of this property and any other property this host may promote! He is very short on honesty with his listings!

Like so many towns, Chester-le-Street has been hollowed out by online shopping. The key difference is that, whereas the towns that are local to where I live that have suffered the same fate as Chester-le-Street provide free parking in an effort to encourage trade, Chester-le-Street charge a fairly full price for parking. Regrettably, if I was in the area again it's not even a place I'd drop into because of the parking fees.

An absolutely amazing hotel you really are staying in a castle with all the historical atmosphere you would hope for. Great staff, amazing food & cocktails. Can’t wait to visit again. The king James suite was truly magnificent.

I was visiting family for a 50th birthday, who lived less than 5 minutes travel away. Ideal location for Durham & Newcastle. Stormy weather prevented us from doing more. The room was a good retreat with a book. Function room ideal for the party.

Chester le Street is a fine town in the centre of historical County Durham. The whole region has many historical attractions which should be of great interest to people in search of the regional culture . The rail service to Durham is very well supported . Road wise The A1M is one of the main arteries in England . As a road and rail traveller , I find it convenient to get to where I need to relatively quickly . Well worth a visit .

I went to school in Chester le Street many years ago so I know the area very well, I now live in Scotland so a visit, although just overnight was excellent. It’s a very historical area with the cathedral and castle in Durham just above the river Wear and has very much ‘Oldie World Charm’. The cathedral has St Cuthbert’s bones laid to rest there and there’s so much more history in the area including two more castles at Chester le Street, Lumley and Lambton ( where the famous ‘Lambton Worm’ song comes from.) It was a very short, sweet visit but the hotel was excellent.

This is our second time staying here. We love coming here. Me and my sister bring our children away for a few days in the summer holidays and its getting harder to find hotels that accommodate all of us so this is absolutely perfect for us. Its the perfect distance from beamish which is our reason for coming up here. The house is nicely furnished. The proper bed in the second bedroom and the foldable table downstairs were nice additions this year. We will no doubt be back again next year

Let's be honest. Lumley is one of the more expensive places to stay in Chester-le-Street. But what is not always recognised is that it is astonishingly good value. The quality of the rooms, the attendance to detail, the helpfulness and - my God - the standard of the breakfast are magnificent. The setting and the walks in the woods around Lumley are exceptional, too. Bravissimo
