I was so disappointed with Devizes.
I was so disappointed with Devizes. It was a historic town that should have kept us walking and looking but it had a feeling of being very run down, despite having some fine historic buildings. Devizes is an historic market town, still reflecting its long coaching history. The large market place, used as a film set for" Far from the madding crowd " and containing the famous Market Cross, is surrounded by a delightful mix of buildings and architectural styles. We were there on a Thursday when the thriving weekly market still occurs . Worth a wander round to soak up the atmosphere and hear the warm local accent. . People still come " in to town" from the surrounding villages to shop and meet up with friends at one of the many local hostelries, a tradition which is centuries old.Guest review byRyan - 8.0
We travelled for a family diamond wedding anniversary party...
We travelled for a family diamond wedding anniversary party in the evening but were able to sample the delights of the local area including a walk on the Kennet and Avon canal. A most historic town with lots to explore.
A most historic town with lots to explore. A good amount of individual shops and the Shambles indoor market exceptional. Several good quality hotels right in the centre. A 25 min walk or a short drive takes you to the Cain flight of 29 locks. A must see.Guest review byKevinUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Interesting and old market town.
Interesting and old market town. Had its heyday in the early 19th Century so lots of roads are still named according to their historical function such as 'Sheep Street'. Lovely Georgian buildings and interesting architecture. plenty of places to eat well. Living in West London we are used to having great Indian food but still managed to have a superb indium]n meal at The Bengal Bite. Didn't have time to visit the Devizes Museum but told by our friend who has lived int he town 14 years, that the Museum is well worth a visit. Devizes is also a short drive from Avebury Rings, the largest group of neolithic stones rings in the UK. Avebury has an excellent National Trust visitor Centre with some of the history of the stones on display in a thatched roof 14th Century barn which is extraordinary. Also a good stopover if you are walking the Kennet and Avon Canal.Guest review byListerUnited Kingdom

Breakfast is exceptionally good, you have to try their bacon sarnie! Location is right in the heart of the beautiful town of Devizes. All the staff are wonderful without exception. Free parking in their car park at back, plenty of spaces. Cost of stay is superb, I've stayed at many hotels in the UK over the years and the ones that have come anywhere close to the Bear Hotel's standard cost at least double the Bear's rate.
