Second visit to Ely as we enjoyed our first visit so much.
Second visit to Ely as we enjoyed our first visit so much. The market on Saturday mornings is amazing with a great variety of stalls, including many locally made crafts. Drayman's Son a local brewery pub/craft beer place is just wonderful. Ely museum and Oliver Cromwell house are well worth the visit. The Cathedral is not to be missed. Plenty of small cafes The riverside is wonderful to walk along and sit and watch the world and boats go by. Places to eat and drink along the riverside and also a large antique/collectables centre. The quaint city of Ely in the county of Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom is far enough off the beaten path and such a lovely place worth visiting that I highly recommend a visit. If you are like me and look for remarkable sites with a lot of local culture while avoiding major crowds, then Ely is your place. Here are my main reasons why you should consider a 2-3 day visit to Ely as part of your UK holiday. 1. Ely Cathedral -- be sure to book a tour in advance. I highly recommend taking the Octagon tour also -- a world architectural marvel! 2. Ely Museum, Stained Glass Museum, Oliver Cromwell's house, waterfront, and walking paths. 3. Local culture. We found a laid back and inviting community. We engaged in numerous conversations with so many people over the weekend. It was welcoming and relaxing. Ely is a small city with a big cathedral.
Ely is a small city with a big cathedral. The cathedral is impressive both inside and out. Other attractions are Oliver Cromwell's house, a museum, riverside with marina and lively Saturday market. A lot to see in a compact, walkable area. The Cathedral is very impressive, with great, guided tours and I attended several services. City Museum and Cromwell Museum are each worth a visit. Our family room - 1 double (a four-poster!) and two singles - was probably the largest family room I’ve stayed in. They were kind enough to serve breakfast at 7:30 for us - Saturday is usually 8:00 onwards - since we had an early appointment to get to. Breakfast was fabulous too.
