I had the most fantastic stay. The building is beautiful, it’s well kept and the room spacious. I thought it was far away from everything (and maybe) but it’s just 4 mins walk to Quay where they have the most amazing restaurants and views.

This was always a characterfull place in a good location, but this time, unde rnew management, it had been comprehensively and stylishly refurbished both in the public areas and in the room, while keeping in the spirit of the place: it now feels and looks much more luxurious than it used to. Breakfast in the sunny front room (or outside front) is as pleasant as always.

FAQs about hotels in Exeter

A Host of History

Set around the Exe River, affluent Exeter has played a part in English history from the Roman era to William the Conqueror to the Spanish Armada. Its most impressive structure is the cathedral, begun in the 11th century and boasting the longest stone roof in England.

The surrounding green is a popular picnic spot, and the half-timbered buildings and red-brick façades of the neighbouring High Street house a host of shops. Even more are in the Princesshay and Guildhall shopping centres.

The Guildhall itself is considered England’s oldest municipal building still in use, while nearby Parliament Street is one of the world’s narrowest streets. The remains of 11th-century St Nicholas Priory are now a museum, and there are more red-stone ruins at hilltop Exeter Castle (or Rougemont Castle), built into the Roman walls.

Exeter Central Station is behind the castle, while St Davids Station is nearer the university. The large student population means that the city has good nightlife, and some bars are located by the Quayside, site of Custom House. The river flows past Topsham and Powderham Castle to enter the sea at Exmouth.

To the east are Exeter Airport and the Westpoint Arena exhibition centre, both easily reached from Booking.com’s hotels with spas, cheap apartments and guest houses with parking.

Have visited Exeter a few times now due to son at Uni. This time ate aten at Pizza Express opposite the catherdal but service is very slow even in quiet times. Was shocked that a glass of wine was £10. There are lots of restaurants to choose nearby.

Exeter is a beautiful city with excellent transport links, restaurants, bars and cafés. It has a beautiful cathedral with lots of history. It is quite hilly so there may be some climbs involved! It is also close to the coast and the harbour area is beautiful. Highly recommended for a city break.

From the White Hart, it's only about 5 minutes walk to the shopping-street which has a very good selection of shops and facilities; it's also about the same distance to the Cathedral, if that's what you like (although there's an entrance-fee, about £8 p/p I think). There's also a city-walls walk - there are whole chunks of the wall still standing, and the remains of a gatehouse, built by William the Conqueror, quite amazing! From South Street it's probably 15 minutes walk downhill to the Quay (although the return uphill takes a bit longer...!), across a bridge over a main road, but it's definitely worth the walk, where there are restaurants and cafes, some interesting craft and souvenir shops, pleasure-boat hire, and a short but very frequent ferry across to the far side of the Exe. I was only in Exeter for one night, but there's a lot more to explore if I ever get the opportunity to visit again.

Exeter has a mixture of architecture, shops and cultural opportunities. It’s easy to cover on foot during a day. Wide streets and open spaces mean that it never feels as oppressive as other city centres. A great range of eateries to suit every pocket and a decent selection of parking options- from city centre multi stories to park and ride. Exeter St David’s is a little bit of a hike from the city centre. The quayside area offers a different environment from the city centre- boat trip, canoe hire etc. Exeter sits modestly as a bit of a gem in the south-west.

Revisiting the place where I was born, which I do from time to time. I have never stayed in a Toby Inn before but I would thoroughly recommend it. Large car park plus outdoor dining and plenty of room inside. Nice friendly bar staff. Clean and tidy.

An ale drinker's paradise, with a micro-brewery on site and a host of ales on tap, this city centre bar is a great social venue. But it is more than a bar; the accommodation is on a par with (and with superior staff to) many superior hotels - at a fraction of the price. It is situated on the main shopping street in Exeter, and quite literally 30 seconds walk to the historic cathedral or restaurants like The Ivy.
