Kirkwall is worth visiting.
Kirkwall is worth visiting. It is clean and tidy with local attractions worth visiting. It is a lovely town with all the facilities needed if exploring further afield is not your thing. Ferries to outlying islands are in the harbour with other ferry terminals being only a short distance away. Car hire is and worthwhile and makes exploring the island easy. I liked St Magnus Cathedral, the Museum and also visited the ruins of the Bishop's Palace and the Earls'. It was exceedingly useful to finally locate the bus terminal and utilise it to get to Scarabrae which was excellent, and has a lovely info centre and Cafe; and Skail House (total contrast) which was included in the admission ticket. The next day I went to Stromness to visit the Pier Gallery which was superb. Spent a Lovely day walking and enjoying the little Braes etc. A enjoyed Stromness very much. I was dismayed to find that the bus service didn't easily get me to other sites of interest, like the Italian chapel. Also Maeshoe (sp) was booked out for days. Plenty to see and do.
Plenty to see and do. Tourist shops and cafe’s quite expensive. A day at the beach costs nothing! We visited Newark beach. A treasure trove for shell or pebble collectors. The Kirk Gallery & Cafe was the perfect place for my birthday brunch.Guest review byNicol - 10.0

We found a little cafe very close by on the right side of the Cathedral as you face it, we had delicious coffee and scones there! We visited off season and rented a car (from Drive Orkney - who were great and uniquely allow their cars off Orkney for a small surcharge). You do need to get around the island(s) and a car or organised tour is necessary. We are told peak season is very busy. We went in February, which could have been awful weather but we really lucked-out with cloudless blue skies and sunshine. The main island (mischievously named 'Mainland') has the most astonishing archaeology from the Neolithic (c.3500 BCE) to the Iron Age.Guest review byNickUnited Kingdom

It is a short walk to ferries and buses and also to the cathedral and museums in Kirkwall. We loved the more spacious room 102 (although being just over a bar is not the best location for a Friday night - unless you are in the bar at that time as well :) This was a navy headquarters building so plenty of objects reminding of the past. The place is located very close to the Kirkwall airport, so even if you have an early flight you'll be there in no time.
