The Capital of Northern England

With an industrial past and a modern outlook, the complex fabric of Manchester is interlaced with interesting museums, English pubs and shopping centers.

Dash straight into the luxurious Selfridges and Triangle departments stores before checking out the old-English charm of the Shambles.

Manchester wouldn't be the same without its 2 famous football clubs and fans can go wild at either of the Old Trafford or City of Manchester Stadiums. Music fans will adore the many shows performed at the Manchester Arena, the largest of its type in Europe, and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

The cultural foundations of this predominantly red-brick city are on display at the Manchester Museum and the People’s History Museum. If art is you preference, the extensive pre-Raphaelite collection at the Manchester Art Gallery is a sight to behold.

There was so much on offer.

There was so much on offer. I had one and a half days where I able to explore: four museums/art galleries - The Lowry, The Science and Engineering Museum, Manchester Art Gallery and The Jewish Museum; I went to Salford Quays, Canal Street, St Peter's Square, Media City; Found statues and paintings of: Turin, Pankhurst, Albert, Gandhi, Lily Savage, Vimto: Visited Manchester Library with the HVI exhibition; Manchester Cathedral where I heard a talk from the Head of Manchester Prison. Wow, what a wonderful weekend!

Manchester is an amazing city - for business or pleasure.

Manchester is an amazing city - for business or pleasure. There is a vast selection of restaurants and the shops are fabulous - although not many independent boutiques, all high-street chains. Not a great city for cars, recommend travelling in by train or taxi. Most of the city centre is pedestrianised, which is much safer when walking around. If you're looking for finer dining, head to Spinningfields, or Grand Pacific (stunning restaurant!). If you're on a hen/stag doo, head for Deansgate or Canal Street. If you're partial to Chinese food, head to China Town - there are some amazing restaurants there! If you're looking for an indy/student vibe, head to the Northern Quarter. Manchester has something for everyone!

We stayed in Manchester one night for a music gig, with a bit of retail therapy in-between. Shops are great, went for a few drinks and a bite to eat at Mackie Mayors. Our hotel Maldron was amazing and very relaxing. thank you Manchester for a great weekend.

I came to see Lady Gaga perform at Co-Op Live on Wednesday...

I came to see Lady Gaga perform at Co-Op Live on Wednesday 8th October 2025, a new arena in the city. If there's an event on there, the arena is very well connected to the rest of the city via the trams. Make sure to check out The Northern Quarter, it's an area full of independent bars, restaurants and shops. Vintage shops? They've got them. Afflecks is another personal highlight. Like your vinyl? Lots of vinyl record shops there. Street art - it's there. I'd love to try a workshop at The Manchester Craft and Design Centre next time. Make sure you eat and drink at the many independent restaurants dotted around the city, you've got all of the national chains back in your hometown. I found the tram system to be a true joy - you simply tap in and out as you go and the compact city centre is very walkable. I felt very safe walking around after dark, but being mindful of my surroundings of course. You will see the worker bee around a lot, it's a symbol of the city's industrial past and a huge part of its identity. If you are a football fan, then you do need to go and do a stadium tour of the two big teams of the city. If you're a member of the LGBTQIA+ community like myself, it's a city that is very welcoming and you can be yourself there. Mancunians are very very friendly, fiercely proud of their city and you can see why.

The Trafford Centre was superb. Reminded me of National Trust houses like Kedleston Hall in Derby. The food area, its a great experience. Manchester Academy 3 for concert. Good and friendly venue, good timings.

    Not a fan of Manchester.

Not a fan of Manchester. It seems deprived of personality - people in general rude - but that's maybe most city folk. Not a clean place to visit - alot of graffiti. The Co Op stadium is in the middle of nowhere so had to uber there and back from the main areas.

We were in Manchester for an event at the Bridgewater Hall. This hotel is a short walk from the venue, in a premier position in the city centre with trams and buses immediately outside the hotel on St Peter's Square, and surrounded by restaurants, pubs, bars and shops. Perfect for an overnight stay and on this occasion, at a very competitive price. The staff at reception were welcoming, helpful and friendly. Our bedroom was very comfortable, clean and fully-equipped for an overnight stay. We would definitely stay here again.

I stayed in Wilde Aparthotel Manchester City Centre for 19 days and I really enjoyed it: great position in the very centre of the city, nice interior design (important for me), a beautiful view over the city from my studio (19th floor), a huge and comfortable bad, a small kitchen well equipped, a small but very well organised/functional bath, and a table where to put my laptop for working. I’ll definitely come again at this Wilde hotel.

Excellent location for popping into Manchester City Centre as the tram stop is a 2 minute walk away, with free parking at the hotel.
