Surfer Days and Steamy Nights
Newquay has that laidback feel that goes hand in hand with being England’s undisputed surfing capital. The centre of the action is Fistral Beach whose swells and Cribbar Reef produce some of the largest breakers in the British Isles. The long, sandy beach is backed by tall dunes which give way to Newquay Golf Club.
Great Western Beach lies below sheer cliffs one street from the train station, while Towan Beach by the picturesque harbour is the closest to the town centre. Tolcarne Beach is sheltered in its own bay, as is the wide stretch of sand at Porth Beach whose northern coastline is 2 rocky headlands joined by a narrow footbridge over the sea.
Each beach is overlooked by luxury hotels with spas, cheap hostels and self-catering apartments on Booking.com. All are surrounded by Newquay’s restaurants, bars and clubs which offer the best nightlife this side of Bristol.
More leisurely pursuits include Trerice manor house in the countryside near the Lappa Valley Steam Railway. Buccaneer Bay and the Blue Reef Aquarium are popular with families, as are Waterworld and Newquay Zoo within Trenance Gardens.
Another favoured spot for a walk are the salt marshes by the River Gannel which is a prominent sight as you descend into Newquay Cornwall Airport.

We loved jumping on the road train and getting off to look around, the zoo, Lake Gardens, and the tour itself. Newquay was a really friendly place with plenty to do for all ages. I took my mum who is 80 and she loved it, especially the Lake Cafe. It was quiet staying at the harbour and everything was easy to get yo. Tick Steins was amazing, and again beautiful views from the restaurant. The Boathouse was another relaxing venue with lovely food. The activities involve: a zoo, crazy golf, lush floral parks, cinema, and spacious well maintained beaches with option for water sports if you're fit enough. Newquay is a lively seaside town with stunning beaches, plenty of places to eat and shop, and a fun coastal vibe. The views from the clifftops are absolutely beautiful and worth the effort, even though I’m not the biggest fan of uphill walks most of the time. The hotel and facilities are very good, the only thing that lets the hotel down is the very poor service in the hotel main restaurant, we waited a long time for a table then over 45 minutes between starters and main course on two occasions. The host was very kind and helpful, which made me feel welcome right away. The hotel itself is in a good location – just a short walk to the beach and close to restaurants and the town centre. Unfortunately, I caught a rainy and windy week, so it was a pity I couldn’t make much use of the outside area. The staff at check in were helpful and advised us of parking nearby as all the hotel parking was full. They also allowed us to check in early which was was really helpful.
