Gateway to the Inner Hebrides
Oban is a city built around a late 18th-century distillery that produces one of the finest single malt whiskeys in Scotland. This normally peaceful town is invaded during summer when tourists use it as a base to visit the Inner Hebrides islands such as Mull, Lismore and Coll, supporting its status as the Gateway to the Isles.
The horseshoe-shaped Oban Bay is sheltered by Kerrera Island with its spectacular Gylen Castle. Award-winning seafood restaurants and lively pubs line George Street and the waterfront of Corran Esplanade adjacent to the harbour.
Take a short walk up the hill to McCaig’s Tower, a structure based on the Roman Colosseum, for the finest views of Oban’s centre and the outer islands. When you get back down to sea level, stroll into and stumble out of the Oban whiskey distillery after sampling the local version of the 'water of life'.
Admire the coastal scenery as you travel a bit out of town to the 7th-century ruins of Dunollie Castle, home of the Clan MacDougall. The Firth of Lorn gives visitors a fanatstic opportunity to try some sea kayaking.

Oban was great. My booking through Booking.com was terrible.
Oban was great. My booking through Booking.com was terrible. The hotel (Great Western Hotel) was a mess. Booked a third floor “Family Room” ($270), two beds. Upon arrival the elevator (lift) was not working nor had it been working for 8 days before our arrival. My partner uses a cane/walker. Had to walk up the first flight of stairs, even the front desk mentioned she could not walk the stairs as she was winded with the first flight. Offered a first floor room, one bed that was so small you could not get around. Offered a second room… a bit larger but still one bed the carpet had holes, mold in the walls, bathroom was dirty. We opted for a new property again booked through Booking.com. Booking.com offered us a 20pound voucher for our troubles. We have used Booking.com as our go to online booking site. We will no longer be using booking.com as they are willing to book you, but will not back up their booking. Booking.com through reviews (if they cared) would have noticed the negative comments being made. yet still was booking through the website. Oban is our place to catch a ferry to the islands and where we land on return. It is a busy town, the harbour and Dunollie being our chief interest the short time we are there, watching the ferries and other vessels sailing off or returning to harbour is always a pleasure. As such it always has an air of excitement about it, the anticipation of a ferry journey amongst and to beautiful islands. We enjoyed Oban very much.
We enjoyed Oban very much. It has just the right combination of authentic activities (ferry services, fishing) and tourist oriented services. I did the Oban distillery tour which was good, even though several processes requiring space take place off site due to the small size of the site in the centre of town. I also took the ferry across to Mull. It was great to get out on the ever-present water which, to me, is at the core of the Oban experience.Guest review byKevin - 10.0

Very friendly people. Spoke to several other visitors who were also enjoying their stay. Several good eating places and good variety of shops. Excellent transport choices from local buses,trains and taxis. Good ferry trips at a reasonable price. We took a boat trip that was amazing ,we saw seals , dolphins about a dozen of them ,we even saw 2 eagles one had a salmon in its mouth ,they flew above us for a while ,it was exciting watching them hover above the boat . The girl on the boat was quite knowledgeable about the wildlife .We eat in the Pizzeria on the front ,the building with the red roof it was very nice we both 3 courses and a drink and it was£70 which I thought wasn’t to bad for the good quality.Its well worth the walk to the tower with the amazing view from the top ,Guest review byAnonymousUnited Kingdom
