It is a delightful place, homey, comfortable, clean, loved the artwork and extra touches. It is located very close to heart of the city so we could walk most places. It is a perfect place to stay and take day trips to the amazing neolithic sites on Orkney. We were lucky to meet our hosts who were lovely and gave us all sorts of tips about Kirkwall and places to see.

The location in St. Margaret’s Hope is so charming. The apartment is so comfortable. It has everything you need. You may want to bring your food if you plan to cook the 1st day. The village store closes early. There are 2 restaurants in town. We ate at both and enjoyed being in the village. We came on a bus from the airport and arrived at 10:05 in the night. There were no taxis available due to a cruise ship being in town. If the Host had not answered our call and met us at the bus stop we would have never found the cottage. The address given us is the name of the cottage, not a viable address to find on Google map. A huge thank you to the Host for being responsive and helpful.

We stayed for three nights after eleven on Shetland.

We stayed for three nights after eleven on Shetland. We found great gluten free eating options in Kirkwall (I will review on Find me Gluten Free). We arrived very late on Friday. Saturday we spent in the many museums, historic buildings, galleries and shops of Kirkwall. We did one day trip by bus and ferryl to the excellent Sccapa Flow museum. Unfortunately the only day we had to do this was Sunday, when the buses are infrequent, so we had to spend most of the day at Scarpa Flow. On the monday, we were on the late night ferry to Aberdeen, and could not stay or leave our luggage in the apartment. So we hired a car - and visited the prehistoric monuments and the museum in Stromness before spending some at Scapa Beach. We ate in The Storehouse restaurant, which was really hospitable and the food was amazing, then getting a taxi to the ferry termina. We had visited a couple of islands in Orkney before, but this was our first time in these parts - we will bve back!

Great coastal hikes. Unbelievable archaeology. Mellow people. Decent public transportation on Mainland. Long, rich history. Beautiful place. Good charity shops and much locally made jewelry. Welcoming services at the cathedral and the Catholic Church. Good restaurants, but suggest you make reservations in advance.

The Churchill Barriers and the Italian Chapel are wonderful and full of fascinating wartime history. Maeshowe was a great visit with the commentary from our guide full of humour and interest. Ring of Brodgar and Stenness - atmospheric - as was Skara Brae. The St Magnus Cafe in Kirkwall is a great, casual eating place and the Ayre Hotel for something more formal - both with very good food.

In our 2.5 day stay, we made every moment count.

In our 2.5 day stay, we made every moment count. This is a beautiful place with majestic geologic features, beautiful landscapes with rolling hills of green lush grass and speckled with sheep (and lambs in May) and cattle (calves in May) and rock walls everywhere. We visited many neolithic sites, including Skara Brae and surrounding sites, all of which were an incredible historical markers, a kind of time travel experience. Visiting the Orkneys is an experience of a lifetime.

The lodges were well equipped with everything you could possibly need. Very comfortable bed and a great view of the night sky from the hot tub. Dorothy is a very welcoming and thoughtful host and we really appreciated all the little extra touches including the milk, bread and butter and sweet treats. Perfect location for exploring Orkney and super wee cottage with everything supplied. It was a bit difficult to find -our satnav had difficulties to start off with. Only problem we found was finding an evening meal after 8pm after the ferry arriving at 8pm - I'd recommend taking food to heat up in the cottage for the 1st night if arriving on 8pm ferry.

While part of my reason for going was work but we also spent several additional days in Orkney. We have been visiting Orkney for many years. Initially we used our caravan but in recent years have been unable to do so. The accommodation we used the first two years was not available but Polrudden provided a very acceptable alternative.
