FAQs about hotels in Plymouth

Life By the Ocean Wave

From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.

Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.

At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.

Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.

Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

We found the people of Plymouth to be welcoming, friendly and helpful. It made such a difference to our stay. The Old Town with its Harbour was also very characterful and picturesque with interesting venues to dine in.

I came for a specific reason; to visit Saltram, and to meet up with some old aquaintances, friends of my dear friend who sadly died a year ago. Plymouth is a ''grows on you'' mixture of shabby 60s City Centre, ' breathtaking view from the area around Smeaton's Tower, interesting slightly run-down areas around Union St and the Dock areas, and touristy chic around the Barbic,on . Saltram has become one of my favourite ever National Trust places. It's that mix of big trees, ferns, mosses, tropical plants meet English favourites. Such helpful staff too, I love it. The walks around are unique too; all the bird lifein the woods and estuary. The drama and beauty of Wembury and Wenbury point are must sees as is the ferry to Cawsand in Cornwall from the Barbicon. Two other favourite places nearby; Buckland Abbey, another National Trust property with wonderful wild walks, and the Garden House, one of the best gardens in England. And the moors of course, via the number 1 bus. Another favourite bus journey from Plymouth is the number 3 to Kingsbridge and Dartmouth via Modbury. All three places deserve a visit. Mdbury is under 30 mins away, has great little art shops, a community orchard and peaceful walks along wooded green lanes. On this brief visit I missed seeing the many varied arts scene of Plymouth, including the excellent TRP. Next time!

Plymouth is lovely for a weekend stay when the weather is warm. Lovely walks around the Hoe. The Barbican area is great for drinks and lunch with lots of places to choose from. The aquarium and boat trips are an added bonus. We really enjoy our breaks away here.

Great city for us and RWY is handy for other locations from Dartmoor to Rame Head. Great to be able to use local ferries to get to Barbican, Mount Edgcumb and Cawsands with other options available too. Barbican remains a good place for music, food and drink and lots of events on through the year.

Plymouth has a good centre. The aquarium is spectacular. There is a lot to enjoy in the city including its' association with the Mayflower and the Plymouth Gin distillery. It is well placed from which to explore Dartmoor and beaches in south west Cornwall by car or public transport.

Lovely little guest house really close to Plymouth Hoe. This is a budget stay but the cleanliness and the quality of the bedding and beds were superior to some much more expensive hotels we've stayed in. They even made beautiful oragami shapes from the towels. Highly recommend.
