Everything about this wonderfully historic hotel was brilliant - our room and the rest of the building such character that I don't think I've seen anywhere else we've stayed. The staff are lovely and more than happy to help. Highly recommended, we'll be back!

Excellent staff and amazing location! The staff were all so incredibly helpful in meeting all of our needs. The location was absolutely perfect for touring the Navy Shipyards. The room had everything we needed. Tons of restaurants near by and a little convenience store too.

This was a super venue with on site parking and a restaurant with lovely food. All the staff were very friendly as was the proprietor who was super helpful too. Despite the rooms being near the pub/restaurant, they were sectioned off so we didn't hear a thing during our stay. The room itself was spotlessly clean, comfortable and well maintained.. I'd thoroughly recommend booking if you're looking for a accommodation that's in a good location and is good value for money.

Sadly, I can't comment on the breakfast. We left at 6 am to catch the ferry. However, the drive to the ferry was short and easy, roughly 20 minutes. The room was spacious and well-decorated. Good reading lights, roomy bathroom, convenient little frig. Wonderful staff. Restauant was good for dinner and it allowed for our free parking.

FAQs about hotels in Portsmouth

Royal Dockyard of the British Isles

An important harbour for centuries, Portsmouth counts with one of the busiest ferry piers in the United Kingdom, has the oldest dry dock still in use in the world. Its Historic Dockyard is home to famous British ships like Lord Nelson's flagship HMS Victory, the Mary Rose and the HMS Warrior.

In the picturesque Old Town you’ll find typical English pubs, coloured houses, and small independent shops. It also has a Fish Market provided by the city’s small fishing fleet. In Old Portsmouth is possible to find smaller hotels, B&B’s and guest houses, some of them not far from the ferry harbour.

The Gunwharf Quays are a modernly renovated shopping area, home to the Spinnaker Tower, while the centre has an ever-growing number of shops. Don’t miss Commercial Road and the Cascades Shopping Centre. Hotels in Portsmouth’s city centre allow you to be close to everything what the city has to offer.

For relaxing moments, Portsdown Hill allows panoramic views over the city and the Isle of Wight. During summer, its sandy beaches are a must.

The walk from old Portsmouth to Southsea became a regular delight. Loads to see at the Victory site - it's a bit pricey but really does offer a full day if you have the interest and stamina! Disappointed that the Charles Dickens birthplace and Garrison Church are hardly ever open and we missed both

If you're visiting, try and get down to Old Portsmouth on...

If you're visiting, try and get down to Old Portsmouth on the cobbles, if you've not experienced some real old architecture before you'll be in for a treat.. the whole area is beautiful, even despite the it being bombed heavily during the war. My personal favourite for food and drinks around there is the Abar, which itself is 2 minutes from Gunwharf, if you fancy a spot of shopping, plenty of more restaurants, or a nice view from up in the Spinnaker Tower… Nice walk along the seafront there, weather pending… if you're up to it, wonder down towards Eastney (to the east funnily enough!) and pop in to The Eastney Tavern, lovely old pub there with decent food From there… if you fancy another good view, head out of town up to Portsdown Hill to The Churchillian, wonderful views especially on a sunny day. If you've got kids, theres an activity centre in Fort Purbrook nearby there, also, if you're interested in some military history, and some big guns! Theres the Royal Armouries in Fort Nelson, which is in the other direction about 10 minutes from there, which is free to visit too.. Overall, really nice town to visit.. Good for a little weekend break away from the city, if you still want a bit of the city and the Sea! There loads more to see around there too, like a day trip, or two, over the Isle of Wight

The Historic Dockyard is fantastic, it needs several days to see everything, if you do want to go in again the explorer ticket is the way to go as it lasts all year and allows multiple visits plus a 50 min harbour trip included. Plenty of places to eat on the front and on Gun Wharf Quay, we used the Ship near the dockyard which looks a bit tired but the food was excellent with very large portions. All sorts of worldwide food is available on the Quay shopping Centre and lots of GF choices. Find an apartment or hotel with free parking, leave the car there and walk or use the really excellent bus services (took our bus passes OK) as parking is at a premium in Portsmouth. Spinnaker Tower is also worth a visit just for the stunning views.

We stayed for one night at the Florence Suite Boutique Hotel. Although the standard room with shower was comfortable, the bathroom was very small. We had dinner at the restaurant, which was excellent, and the mushroom tagliatelle was superb. We did have a walk out around the area, which brought us ten minutes away to a variety of pubs and shops, stopped for a drink at The Vaults, the beer I can report from my husband was very good.

Was so pleasantly surprised by this hotel. All of the staff were absolutely lovely and very helpful. The room was very nice, the bathroom super clean (with great shower pressure, a spacious tub, and VERY good hand soap). The bed was extremely comfy — unusual for all of the pillows to be as comfortable as this hotel. The decor of the entire place was very fun, properly themed. I had a good look at all the model boats. The breakfast was pretty standard, very edible. Spectacular location for Portsmouth Harbour attractions & Gunwharf Quays.
