This is the perfect country pub. It is stylish and clean and the food is excellent, but it is not in the slightest pretentious or ‘gastro’. We ate a delicious dinner, stayed in an extremely comfortable, well decorated and well maintained, family room and ate a hearty, gourmet standard, breakfast featuring local produce. The rate for the room and breakfast was so reasonable it seemed wrong not to be paying more. Best of all, the staff were unusually friendly, welcoming and good with our three, often boisterous, children. They even rang us ahead of our arrival to warn that there was a party being held in the pub the evening of our arrival and letting us know that it might be noisy (which it was not!). I could not recommend this hotel and restaurant more highly.

Lovely old building housing both a small hotel (6 rooms) and a superb restaurant, Thai by Ja, expertly run by Ja and Martin - and with a 15% discount for hotel guests. At £101.75 for the room and breakfast, plus £35.50 for a super meal with two beers, it was a bargain. Almost worth making a special trip to the Isle of Wight for. Hotel check-in is self-service, based on pre-registration and an SMS to tell you your room number and the codes needed to enter the hotel and access your room key. Unfortunately, I didn't get an SMS and arrived to find a locked door quoting an emergency phone number that was diverted to voicemail. However, there was also a sign saying the restaurant, whose entrance is just around the corner of the building, was open. There I found Ja's other very friendly half, Martin, who let me in and gave me the key to my first floor room, room 2. Note that there is no lift and half the rooms are on the second floor. My room was spacious, with a rustic look but it had both underfloor heating and a Daikin heating and airco system plus a modern bathroom. Ja (or Martin) had forgotten to put out any towels but this was quickly remedied by Martin. The room had a spacious cupboard with 6 clothes hangers and a safe, plus a chest of drawers, two bedside tables, an old workman's table as a desk and a fan, as well as the very comfortable bed, two antique industrial stools, an armchair, a Nespresso-type coffee machine, a ketlle and a hairdryer (see the comment below about the shower). For my taste, there were two minor negatives: I don't much like hotel rooms with carpeted floors or so-called rain showers, above the bath moreover, which mean that it's difficult to shower without getting your hair wet. There was ample lighting and some 8 power points, though none in the bathroom.

The cleanliness of the caravan which was carried out by Aimee and Laura - brilliant team and thank you. The area is nice and a walk around the lake is peaceful. The kiddies play park area is small but close to the restaurant which is helpful. The restaurant was over priced - a small bottle of coke £4.40 and beef burgers from 17.95 ! The food was tasteless and you did not get a lot for your money. The wait was over an hour - simply not impressed at all. If you want a good meal take yourself to the Crab in Shanklin where a kiddies meal will cost you £3.95 and it is bigger than the adult meal at Rookley. The restaurant was closed on the following evening so no take away available (for those who may have wanted to use it) There was no reasons the staff did not seem to know the answer. The indoor swimming pool dirty - the water was not clear and the bottom and sides of the pool were slimy - I would not use it again - just because you can smell chlorin does not mean the pool is clean! The lifeguards did not look particularly bothered about was what going on - maybe their wages are too low!? There is a night club which has kiddie evenings - so for a family that is nice - It is a real shame as all the facilities are on site but are just not available. If the aim is self-catering then do that and check around the area for reasonably priced pubs and cafes -

The worst part was the central facilities. the Restuarant and the bar area. We booked a table for the 10 of us. based on the menu online. On arrival we were informed that it was a limited menu. (very limited) the staff behind the bar, 5 at one point where available when no one was there but when anyone wanted serving disappeared. Some were more interested in their mobiles. when the food came out, we only had 8 meals and error (what I still don't understand is they used an EPOS system, but the orders were handwritten). Behind us was a table of six they only got three meals. another table also complained. We had asked for confirmation on ordering of 10 meals. when the meals came out in dribs and drabs no one asked if “everything was ok”. basic management was not evident. Although the food was ok. Generally, we found many minor issues with maintenance in the three chalets we booked clearly no maintenance checks. even found someone's underpants in one of the washers. the images of the chalets show big clocks only one had hands on them the other didn't work. one chalet had Wi-Fi although not advertised. in the amusement arcade many of the machines where broken but wouldn't take much fixing. Their seemed to be a major push on selling holiday homes. which looked good and reasonably priced. but the general attitude of the staff and poor use of the facilities will put many off. It’s a real shame that the staff and management are not driving excellence. Our frustrations are from a position that with a little more care this would be an excellent holiday location I would add that we still had a great holiday. Although the chalets where well equipped with a large fridge freezer there is nowhere to store non chilled food! P.S don’t advertise a facility if you cannot deliver.

Rookley itself is just a small village in the centre of the IOW. There is nothing to particularly recommend it as a place to visit, it's more of a handy location for a caravan park, where we stayed

The site is nice enough and very nicely situated for what we needed, walking around the Island over a week. There were things that could improve the holiday site, but did not ruin or detract fromk the holiday experience - The laundry machines did not work, TV in bar did not work, but were told they could not show it anyway as they had no licence to, last orders were at 21:30 and stopped serving food at 20:00 (Last point wouldn't have been an issue if we were told whern booking a table for 12 for 19:00 - however, they did actually reopen the kitchen for our sweet we ordered at 20:10, so thank you for that

Parking near the caravan.

Parking near the caravan. Visit was out of season so facilities like entertainment not open, was advised of this prior to holiday. Lakes probably would look nice in the Summer. Quiet calm site. Staff friendly. The Chequers Pub around 4 minutes drive away. Nice food there. Bus stops available but car really better for visiting places. Coop 2 minutes from main entrance to the right. Useful.

Overall Rookley suited our plans to visit the island at an affordable cost. The accommodation was clean and welcoming. A quite retreat in September with onsite facilities available if required. Little things to help the stay more enjoyable, could be a welcome pack of small items such as hand soap. If this is not an option, then greater detail on the website of what is and is not provided in the unit. if your still not sure then make contact prior to your visit

Very comfortable, clean, quiet caravan position on a lovely site for a family of 3 and 2 dogs. Stayed on the Rookley site before so chose to return for a short stay and managed to find this lovely little property and will def return here. Ferry discount offered by owners made it all the more sweeter!!
