Followed the Walking Trail which led us to The Cathedral and the park, which were lovely with good riverside walks. The Court Room museum was interesting - and the Wednesday market was good. Great Italian restaurant just opposite the hotel.

So much to see. Great eating places. Amazed at how tourist friendly. Ate at the French restaurant Roux on the Saturday night. Great 2 course set menus for £20.95. Place was heaving and great atmosphere. Bill's for Sunday brunch. Comfortable dining on sofas and good tasting food.

Overall I found St. Albans disappointing.

Overall I found St. Albans disappointing. Yes, the Cathederal is wonderful and the Roman remains worth a visit but the town itself was nowhere near as charming as I had anticipated. I was expecting an interesting mediaeval town of higgly piggly streets but these were very limited. Pubs were ordinary for the most part, the Mermaid was the hands down winner. Frankly a day and a night would have done me.

We loved the Roman remains and Museum and really enjoyed visiting the Cathedral, which was free and very welcoming. We spent a very interesting wet afternoon at the preserved Signal Box (my husband is a rail enthusiast!) and also at the De Haviland museum just the other side of the motorway. We found a couple of good old fashioned pubs where the food was good - The Bull and The Six Bells. We also enjoyed a meal at Little Marakesh.

Great compact town with enough nice mix of independent and chain shops & cafes. Very good Saturday market. Town surrounded by loads of history and park areas. Beautiful cathedral. Good walk to interesting ruin of Bacon family home.

Booked to stay as I'd stayed last year. Viv and Brian are excellent hosts, friendly and chatty. The premises are well situated, a quiet location, an effortlessly short distance from the town centre, close to the bus stop with frequent buses, saving you trying to park in town or pay the expensive parking charges. A very comfortable night's sleep. You're not an anonymous guest in a big hotel. Will definitely book again when I'm in the area.

This is a traditional, centuries-old coaching inn in a good city centre location, with its own car parking. It has lots of character, including wonky floors, sloping ceilings and creaking stairs. Location is good, close to the abbey and having its own car park is a real good point.

Hotel & Spa beautiful, greeted at both receptions with friendly smiles and happy to help. Breakfast had so much selection and tasty. The bar area was also warm and cosy, we had lunch before the spa and drinks in there after dinner.

The smoking area was at the front of the property I think underneath the window, and there was a strong smell of cigarettes as soon as we walked in. But overall, the hotel is very good value for money.
