Beyond The Full Monty
Partially within the Peak District, Sheffield is best known for being the setting of ‘The Full Monty’, a film whose title means the whole works. Indeed, vibrant Sheffield has the whole works - excellent shopping, great nightlife and an impressive sporting heritage.
It first came to fame during the Industrial Revolution for its pioneering role in the UK steel industry. One technique invented here is commemorated in the name of its most famous theatre – The Crucible, home of the Snooker World Championships.
Close by are the peaceful Winter Gardens with their multi-arched roof. The Peace Gardens are overlooked by the elegant town hall, and the focal building of the impressive Botanical Gardens somewhat resembles Crystal Palace, also by the same architect.
The city’s 2 football teams – Sheffield United and Wednesday – play at Bramall Lane and Hillsborough Stadium respectively. The cutting-edge English Institute of Sport is also based here, and the nearby Sheffield Arena is a prime UK venue for music and entertainment. The best shopping is found in the Meadowhall Centre near Rotherham.

I only came to see my friend who started to study at the University. But it was really nice surprise how the city was nice. People are very friendly. I love the old buildings, old church, and the new architecture, all nicely mixed and nicely done. I also love the tram. I felt the city was really safe. Lots of nice restaurants and pubs. I also found very reasonable guesthouse with the parking. This guesthouse made me to stay longer in the city. the size of the city is just right. Not too big. Not too small. For over 60 years I have found the people of Sheffield the most welcoming population for my many enquiries over that time regarding 'where' places are in and around the city centre and the wider area and how to find them. Not only are they very helpful and welcoming BUT the number of residents who have offered to take me to a point where I could either see my destination OR see a significant landmark to reach/find my destination. It happened again this weekend - it always happpens and they are so reliable in their efforts, their care for people, it seems to come naturally to them to make visitors welcome ... notable and remarkable. Well done people of Sheffield and THANK YOU. The Bus Station/Interchange staff are similarly extremely helpful ... nothing is too much trouble. THANK YOU. My OAP Bus Pass/ENCTS Pass qualifies me for free travel on the Sheffield Trams but I live in the outskirts of Greater Manchester = TfGM area. Another 'plus' to add to the attraction of Sheffield. THANK YOU, Sheffield. This weekend, I explored the woderful Sheffield Round and today enjoyed Porter Valley in the glorious sunshine of the first day of Autumn - excellent cafe and staff and facilites at Forge Dam - I thoroughly recommend. Location was perfect for the weekend to attend a music event at the Utilita Arena and to get in & out of Sheffield City Centre using the Trams. Complementary parking for the weekend was a bonus although at £5 a day, was considered acceptable. Although we did not visit Meadowhall shopping centre, location of hotel meant it was within walking distance.
