Surprisingly not an apocalyptic post-industrial wasteland... the football fans and the people generally are some of the friendliest I have met in my travels around the UK. Ended up walking back across the city to my hotel as the taxis were all busy, quite enjoyed it - even heard owls somewhere down by the river. I was in Sunderland for a conference so saw very little of Sunderland. It was a nice surprise to come across a concert for Pride on a break in the conference. I don't know how much there is to do in Sunderland so it might be better to combine it with a trip to Newcastle. Sunderland do have a decent football stadium, though.
