I loved the old town, cobbled narrow streets, the 199 steps up to the Abby and leading to Whitby Brewery. The views from the top of the steps were absolutely beautiful. Lots of quirky characterful shops, great little pubs with wide selection of drinks and some wonderful restaurants serving amazingly delicious food. Busy town at the weekend.
Busy town at the weekend. Got quieter during the week (early October). Lovely beach, dog friendly between October and end of May which was perfect for us. Our dogs had a fantastic time! Whitby is famous for its connection to Dracula, the story being that Bram Stoker was inspired by seeing a coffin being taken up the 199 stairs to St Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey. It is a lovely town with many small shops on both sides of the harbour. St Mary's is a beautiful and very unusual church and the abbey is also spectacular. There are shops on both sides of the harbour and many cafes and restaurants. Further afield is Robin Hood's bay which is a quaint and very pretty village. Great place for coastal walks and trying local beers. Plenty of history regarding Captain Cook, and the Dracula legend. The beach looks like it would be great in summer, we visited off season so all we did was walk along it. It looks like there would be plenty of sightseeing trips by boat, and fishing trips, available in summer. There is a great variety of restaurants, pubs, and smaller hotels, which should cater for most tastes. The emphasis is on fish dishes, and local beers and gins. Whitby is a lovely place to visit with lovely old streets and shops to explore, lovely harbour and great views from the abbey. Check other feedback regarding cleaning. We arrived to find a lovely place however let down by very poor cleaning dead fly's on window cils didn't think to much about it until we went outside and found a glass jar full of cigarettes ends left right next to the door. But to top it off there were dog poo bags witch had been left full of poo between the door step and drain cover which might of explained the dead fly's in the house as there was a half inch gap at the bottom of the kitchen door see pictures. I have emailed host and stay to bring it to there attention but received no refund or explanation. There is no secure garden for pets so be aware of that. So for £380 for 2 nights which was reduced I think it was very over priced. Check pics discusting. I forgot to mention dog poo in yard not picked up which I stood in. Not goodGuest review bySmith

The majority of our stays have been at The Royal. It's central for everywhere ! Rooms are clean and comfortable, we paid extra for a sea-view and weren't disappointed. Spare pillows in the wardrobe, which we found useful. Breakfast is plentiful and varied, and being buffet style, you can go back for more.
