Brilliant place! My room, called Post Box, was on first floor in the building opposite the pub, with views to the pub and up Canon Street from a comfy chair. So quiet, so cosy, so luxurious! All very spacious, even an extra chamber with desk. Best shower ever. Breakfasts in the famous pub were delicious à la carte. Lots of history and beauty here, right on your doorstep. I stayed 5 nights, but wish it were 50.

Wonderful service excellent food and we had a great character room. Comfortable and clean nice helpful staff, we would stay here again. A little hard to find, it's about 500 meters further down the road than our GPS indicated but obvious when you see it.

Some towns and cities in England are only historic in the sense that a thoughtful (or shamefaced) Council has preserved a few remnants of the past among the concrete, steel and glass of modernity. Winchester however is among the honoured ones where history outweighs the contemporary. It is impossible to miss the past even on the shortest of walks in the city centre - across the road from the newish retail centre are house walls containing Anglo Saxon and Norman stone carvings as an example. Winchester is justly proud of its history from ancient Britons through being a Roman settlement to Alfred setting the capital of his hard won battles for supremacy over the Vikings in Winchester to the later Norman conquest establishing the castle and cathedral and the presence of monarchy right through to the 1800s. Winchester, it has to be said is one of my favourite English cities - I keep returning for the simple reason of its consciousness about its historical focus. It is a city that behaves more like a small countryside market town and long may that image remain

Of course the Cathedral was the highlight. We attended two Evensong services which were amazing. The map of Winchester from the information office was rather confusing with lots of people we talked to agreeing that 'it might have been printed up-side-down!

    Do visit the cathedral.

Do visit the cathedral. You do pay but then can go on an excellent free guided tour lasting an hour or more. Recommend Park and Ride for visiting the centre. Lovely walks along the river. Guided tours of the town are available. Surrounding area many attractions eg Jane Austen's house, Gilbert White's house and a number of National Trust properties

Great location . Hotel in need of major upgrade .

Great location . Hotel in need of major upgrade . Not a chance it is 4 star . Felt very misled . Paid a decent price but didn’t feel received anywhere near the standard of a 4 star more like 2 star hotel . Felt sorry for the staff who are being clearly unde managed . One person running the show at breakfast is so poor . Poor housekeeping .. rooms dusty and ill equipped . Seems that part reviews aren’t acted on whatsoever . Such a shame as it could be fabulous with it having a prime location and parking available .

Winchester is an old and attractive city with many historic sites to visit and enjoy which can all be reached easily on foot. If you're interested in the history of our country then Winchester is for you. Connections with Alfred the Great and other Saxon Kings of both Wessex and England and also with William the Conqueror. Walking Tour of much of the historic sites in the city can be arranged from the Tourist Information which is located close to the historic statue of Alfred the Great. Cathedral must be one of the most spectacular in England, complete with the grave and tombstone of Jane Austin and the remains of a number of many of the Saxon kings of Wessex and England and surprisingly King Canute, the Dane who became England's king. William the Conqueror came to Winchester in 1066, rebuilt the cathedral and fortified the city. Connections with the reformation and later the English Civil War. Saint Swithin was Bishop of Winchester in pre Norman times and stories of him abound. All can be seen in and around the cathedral and city. Lots of great places to eat including Rick Stein's restaurant where we ate succulent Sea Bass. Plenty of choice. Good shops too.

The staff were very helpful and the main building is impressive. Breakfast was delicious. The bed was very comfortable and we had a good night's sleep. There is also a car park at the back of the hotel and it is easy to walk into the centre of Winchester. The bar was spacious and comfortable and the barman very helpful.
